2027 Hyundai Elantra Leaks Early. And It Looks Nothing Like Before

The next-generation 2027 Hyundai Elantra is already generating buzz and there has been many illustrations guessing what it could look like.
One thing all these illustrations have in common is a totally different design language form the current generation. Which has been comfirmed by the many spy shots we have seen of the real thing.
A Bold (and Possibly Controversial) New Look
If accurate, the new Hyundai Elantra could mark one of the biggest design shifts in the model’s history. While the current version, launched in 2020 and refreshed in 2023, already stands out, the next-gen car may adopt a weirdo retro-futuristic style.
Early prototypes suggest a flatter roofline and more upright A-pillars, hinting at inspiration from older models. However, the rendering’s styling may divide opinions, with some enthusiasts already calling it unconventional.
Familiar Quirks Stick Around
One design element that appears to remain is the fastback silhouette with a traditional trunk, often described as a “faux hatchback.” It’s a look that prioritizes style over practicality, and it’s likely to continue sparking debate. It is really a shame not to offer a proper hatchback if you asl me…
A Bigger Role in Hyundai’s Future?
The new Elantra may not just be a redesign, it could become Hyundai’s most important sedan. With the Hyundai Sonata potentially being phased out in the U.S., the Elantra might grow in size to fill the gap.
If that happens, it could effectively become Hyundai’s last internal combustion sedan, as the company still accelerates toward an electric future.
Platform and Powertrain Expectations
Despite the bold exterior changes, the next Elantra is expected to ride on an updated version of its current platform. This reflects a broader industry shift, as automakers focus investment on EVs rather than developing new architectures for gasoline models.
Looking ahead, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions are likely by 2027. Meanwhile, competitors like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla are also moving toward standard electrification, increasing the pressure on Hyundai to adapt quickly.
Still, newer rumors suggest that the upcoming model may initially carry over existing engines.
The End of an Era?
Over the years, the Elantra has evolved into one of the most striking compact sedans on the road. A retro-inspired redesign could be a bold gamble. Especially given that older generations weren’t exactly design icons.
At least the new Elantra will not look like eanything elseon the road. Which might or might not be such a good thing.
With a new Honda Civic and a new Toyota Corolla due out before the end of this year, it will be interesting to see how the new Elantra design will be received. The new generation is rumored to be revealed as early as next month.
