Audi A2 Is Back: Sleek New Electric Hatch May Debut in 2026 as a Premium VW ID.Cross Rival.

It looks like Audi will soon introduce a brand-new small EV, likely based on upcoming compact models from Volkswagen like the Volkswagen ID.Cross. And interestingly, Audi will revive a classic name: the Audi A2.
The original Audi A2 was a small, futuristic car produced between 2000 and 2005. It was ahead of its time, with lightweight construction and a strong focus on efficiency—qualities that make even more sense in today’s EV landscape. The new version, expected to be called the A2 e-tron, aims to reinterpret that concept as a modern electric vehicle.
From early teasers and illustrations, the new A2 already looks sleeker and more refined than its VW counterpart. While VW’s design leans toward practicality, Audi appears to be pushing a more premium, aerodynamic look. However, earlier spy shots hinted at the brand’s familiar oversized and ghastly EV grille. Similar to what we’ve seen on models like the Audi Q4 e-tronwhich could be a drawback for anyone with good taste if not toned down.
As expected, the Audi version will sit above the VW in terms of pricing and features. According to Audi’s official statement: “Electric mobility must work seamlessly in daily life—efficient, compact, and confident.” That is one generic statement that can apply to almost any car. Or even a toaster or Microwave oven. It just means nothing. Nothing at all…
The new A2 is expected to debut after the VW model, likely toward the end of 2026. Unfortunately, it may not be sold in the U.S., continuing Audi’s trend of keeping smaller hatchbacks in Europe.
