2028 Acura RDX Hybrid preview.

While Honda was showing the next-generation Accord Hybrid, Acura previewed the next-generation RDX. Since, you know, they canceled the all-new RSX month before it was supposed to come out.

The RSX was actually not supposed to replace the RDX, and Acura had mentioned a second generation RDX a few months ago. The new SUV looks fine and yes, more modern than the aging current model it will replace. But, just like the 2028 Accord, it looks quite generic. This could really be anything, from a Mazda, to anything from China. Or even anything else like a Toyota or even a future Ford. It just has zero personality, and nothing that says Acura.

At least the DOA RSX did. it did look like a futuristic Acura. This does not.

The new Acura will use the same platform as next-generation Accord. Which could same some dough for Honda. A company that will probably soon be in trouble after a series of bad decisions.

Acura will also replace the Pilot with a new Hybrid, however it will probably be on another larger platform. And its new Hybrid system will use a V6. While the RDX and Accord Hybrids will still be powered by a 4 cylinder.

Here is the official word from Acura: “Acura will begin launching its first hybrid models featuring the company’s all-new hybrid system and next-generation platform starting in the next two years. The next generation of the company’s award winning two-motor hybrid system has been improved through advancements such as expanding the range where the engine operates most efficiently and an increase in the driving efficiency of the hybrid unit. In total, Honda will strive to improve the fuel economy of the next-generation hybrid models by more than 10%, while reducing system costs by 30% and further advancing a unique Honda driving experience.  In addition, a newly developed electric AWD unit will allow highly precise and responsive motor control.”

A 10% improvement in MPG might not be that much on the Accord. But it will probably transform the RDX. I have driven the current version many times and usually averaged around 18MPG city and 25 on the HWY. A new Hybrid system could improve these number by a lot.

A Hybrid SUV 2 years away isn’t great news for Acura. No PHEV or EREV are planned. And of course no EVs at all for the US. It seems Honda/Acura is betting billions on current market place taste staying the same for many, many years. By inviting everything in regular good old Hybrids.

Good luck…

  1. “Hey, guys. Let’s turn our calipers logo sideways, and make tweezers taillights out of it.”

“Uh, sure, boss. Whatever you say.”

“And cancel RSX. This’ll do fine instead. Americans will love it! I mean, who doesn’t love a good pair of tweezers?”
