The Buick Roadmaster Could Be Making a Stunning Comeback

Buick is working on a new RWD sedan for the North American market. As we already know, it will share its platform with a second generation Cadillac CT5, and the new 4 door Chevrolet Camaro. 

The new model will be Buick’s first sedan sold in the US since 2020. the new images above show what the new sedan could look like. Of course, there is no name yet, but Buick has many to pick from its long history. They have been using the “Electra” name for their EVs in China, which of course is a great name for electric cars. I personally think a return of the Roadmaster would be an obvious choice for the North American model. 

The revised platform is rumored to offer a V8 version for the Chevrolet and Cadillac models. Which sounds fun until you currently pay for gas. If GM decides to still offer a V8 in these cars, it will probably be in limited numbers. My guess would be a hybrid or EREV. Something they’ve been offering in the Chinese market for a while. And keep promising for the US as well. But nothing yet. Apparently, a few GM hybrids are planned for next year. The new sedans could be among them. 

The new Chinese market Electra L7 is offered with an EREV powertrain as well as a pure EV. While it does use a small 15. Liter engine as a generator, the powertrain produces around 340HP. Which would be more than enough for a larger sedan. The 40.2 kWh battery pack also delivers an electric only range of 190 miles. Which could still translate in around 140 miles EPA. Which would beat anything from anyone currently offered in the US. The total range is rated at almost 900 miles. Or over 700 miles EPA equivalent. Still amazing. It is pretty baffling to know that GM has this technology ready and isn’t offering it in the US. And by the way, the gorgeous Electra L7 EREV sedan starts at $24,000 in China. 

Historically, Buick often sat between Chevrolet and Cadillac, which often made it difficult for its models to stand out. If GM launches all three sedans, Buick would once again need a clear identity. A standard EREV powertrain would be a great way to achieve something special for Buick. 

GM is now set to introduce three completely new sedans in the coming years. That would be big news in a market where sedans have been steadily disappearing.

  1. I would love a new Buick Toadmadter, including a wagon. But the rumor is it will be a small AWD sedan.

  3. GM to Buick: “You may have any sedan name you want as long as it’s Regal.” 😉

    Personally, I like the Roadmaster moniker. However, it makes me think first of a wagon, which probably has more to do with me generationally than your typical Buick loyalist who’d remember classic incarnations of the Roadmaster.

  4. I really like that front end. Gotta say, Buick is going to probably have difficulty finding something that is both luxurious in design AND simple so that it looks modern. That seems to be the problematic needle the Accord also tried to thread… making it modern and familiar without being overly simple and looking like everything else (Hyundai). I wish them luck – we need more sedan options out there.

  7. if you actually believe real styling is gonna happen in 2026 even though every manufacturer is deliberately going out of their way to style everything using only right angles, zig zags, and sharp creases … then you’d probably also believe that there’s nice oceanfront property for sale somewhere in Nebraska

  8. “Roadmaster” is too old fashioned. I do hope that Buick assigns it a name outside of their current ridiculous scheme that everything has to begin with “En”.

    I do like the front end styling on the vehicle in the speculative illustrations. It has much more character and looks more “Buick” than the current generic Chinese market inspired front end styling on their current crossover only lineup.
