New Ford Affordable Sedan Could Revive the Spirit of the Crown Victoria.

The good old Ford Crown Victoria still has many friends these days. Some of them are even asking Ford for its return, which is kind of funny. As by the end, it was basically just used by Police Departments, taxi fleets and very old geezers missing the big 1970s land yachts.

But as it’s been mentioned a few times, sedans might be on the eve of a resurgence. It seems the ones that are still around are seeing very good sale numbers. And most of them are still more efficient and less expensive than SUV equivalents. As far as the Crown Victoria is concerned, the panther platform it was based on disappeared with it. And Ford has currently nothing it could use for a new large sedan. Except maybe the CD6 platform used of the Ford Explorer. Which originally, was also going to be used for the Mustang. before Ford decided to save a few bucks and redesign the Mustang on the same platform. otherwise, we are talking about the new Universal EV Platform. Which seems the only new platform Ford is working on these days.

That could fit recent rumors of a new sub-$40,000 sedan. At a recent dealer meeting in Las Vegas, Ford even mentioned five new products under $40,000 coming, with at least one being a sedan. These are expected to offer a choice of powertrains, including gas, hybrid, or EV. Which is confusing, since the new platform is reportedly EV-only. Unless Ford has quietly developed a way to support hybrid versions as well. It also sounds like most of these upcoming vehicles could be based on that architecture, pointing to a major shift in how Ford builds its future lineup.

It was also mentioned these vehicles would be all-new models, not redesigned versions of current cars and trucks. And unfortunately, they are also planned to have new names. That would mean the new car no matter how large it is, would not be called Crown Victoria.

The illustrations above shows a modern large Ford sedan wearing the Crown Victoria name. Something that might never happen…

Still, these models are planned before 2030. And while that may not sound far away, four years is a long time in the car business. 4 years is plenty of time for Ford suits to change their minds about names. Or anything else.

So maybe, just maybe, the spirit of the Crown Victoria could return in a new form: electrified, modern, and surprisingly affordable.
