GMC Terrain EV.

Last Updated:

GMC has just released an all-new version of the Terrain compact SUV, alongside the equally new Chevrolet Equinox.

While Chevrolet offers an EV version of its compact SUV, as the Equinox EV, GMC does not have an Ultium-based compact SUV. Something like a Terrain EV.

While Chevrolet and Cadillac are already using the Ultium platform for many new EVs, with even more coming soon, GMC has only announced their version of the Chevrolet Silverado EV called the Sierra EV.

So far the new 2025 Equinox has been getting pretty underwhelming reviews. Which is quite the opposite of the Equinox EV which has been described as “Surprisingly well rounded”, and “Much better than the gas-powered version”. With a starting price of $35,000 before incentives, it is also cheaper than the gas version for most buyers.

The Equinox is Chevrolet’s best-seller, besides their full-sized trucks. And the Equinox EV is quickly finding buyers. It is rather strange to see GMC stop at the Sierra in their EV push with nothing, at least so far, rumored after the pickup. Especially since GM is aggressively pushing its new SUV models. With many affordable lease deals available for the Ultium-based Chevrolets and Cadillacs.

A Terrain EV seems like a no-brainer to develop the GMC brand. Although it is not alone in the EV desert. Buick has literally no EVs in the US, while it is making quite a push in the Chinese market. With the Electra E4 and Electra E5, on top of their older Buick Velite 6. Buick’s EV model has recently been delayed in the US by at least a year.

I guess once Chevrolet and Cadillac EVs really pick up (The Lyriq is already the second best-selling Cadillac) we will probably see these new Buick EVs. And maybe even a GMC or two…

  1. Vince, what reviews are you watching that are underwhelming for the ICE Equinox? I have seen quite a few positive reviews for both the Equinox EV and the ICE. Also, I think you are forgetting the Hummer. It is now under GMC instead of its own brand, so GMC has the Sierra EV plus the Hummer SUV EV and Hummer pickup EV. I think with a lot of people cooling on the idea of buying an EV, GM needs to focus more on hybrids. Sure, they still need to develop EVs as well since that market isn’t going away, but for the next decade or more, their focus should be hybrid.
