VW just released teasers for their all-new Tayron SUV in Europe.
So far, the Tayron was a Chinese market version of the long wheelbase version of the European Tiguan. Which was sold in North America as “Tiguan”. Since we never got the current generation’s shorter 5-seater model.
VW released an all-new generation 2-row Tiguan in Europe last year. It now seems they will be selling a longer model called the Tayron instead of “Tiguan AllSpace”. For some odd and confusing reason.
The new Tiguan we will get over here will be the car pictured above, sold as Tayron in Europe and China. All this shows how confused and over-complicated VW’s lineup is around the world. No wonder they need to cut costs…
VW has recently shown interest in offering hybrids and even possibly PHEV models in the US. Something they had previously announced would never happen. It seems having only one EV in the US lineup might not be enough to push electric cars in North America after all. They recently pushed back (and probably actually canceled) the ID.7 and we’re still waiting for that larger 3-row EV. On top of that, the new ID. Buzz will be grossly overpriced starting at over $61,000 and will have a very disappointing 235 miles range with zero upgrades available. Way to go VW!
With only the ID.4 for the past 4 years to carry VW’s electrification dreams in the US, they finally realize they might actually need more. The new European Tiguan is available with a very attractive PHEV option that produces almost 270HP and gets 62 miles of EV range in the European test cycle. Which could still be about 50 miles EPA. A figure that would beat all of its US competition like the Toyota RAV4 Prime (42 miles), or Ford Escape PHEV (37 miles).
However, my guess is VW will still offer the new Tiguan in the US with their usual 2.0 Liter Turbo.
