Future Pontiac Firebird.
Last Updated:
Once in a while, it feels good to maybe go completely nuts and imagine something that will never be. Like a new Pontiac Firebird, a modern, 21st-century version of the one good old Jim Rockford was driving in the Rockford Files TV show.
I thought I would never ever see a new Hummer model again, and guess what? GM decided to come up with 2. A giant SUV and pickup based on their new Ultium EV platform. Since there are no Hummer dealers anymore, these were conveniently called “GMC Hummer”.
Could we ever see something as crazy as a “Pontiac Firebird by Buick”? probably not. But then again…
The Firebird lasted 4 generations before GM killed it in 2002. When the Chevrolet Camaro made a historical comeback in 2009, the Firebird wasn’t part of the deal. And the whole Pontiac brand was killed soon after in late 2010.
So far, GM has used the Ultium EV platform for SUVs and pickup trucks. The only Ultium-based car I can think of is the upcoming Cadillac Celestiq. A $340,000 luxury sedan we first saw as a concept in January 2021.
However, Cadillac has been rumored to be working on 2 new fastback EV sedans. Early images advertising the Ultium platform a few years ago showed both a 2 door coupe as well as what looked like a wagon.
GM has also mentioned a probable return of the Camaro based on that same platform.
Why not…
I miss Pontiac. A lot.
Rockford Files was a great show. I loved the Trans Am and Firebird growing up.
I miss anything that isn’t an SUV.
The only scenario that would take place if the Firebird returned is that even fewer people would buy it, and it would be discontinued even more quickly than before.
