Future Ford Thunderbird.

Last Updated:

Ford has a few plans for future EVs, and none of them seem to include a new Ford Thunderbird.

The big-row SUVs have been delayed but are still coming, probably late next year. And Ford is hard at work on an all-new cheaper-to-produce small EV platform. The first results of which will be a small SUV and a compact pickup.

Since the new platform will turn a profit, why not build something fun on it? Like a 2 door convertible. Ot another crack at a modern Thunderbird. Something no one would probably buy.

The original Thunderbird was built from late 1954 to 1997. The convertible body style was discontinued in 1967.

Later, in 2002, Ford came out with an all-new Thunderbird for the modern age with a really cool retro-futuristic design. And it was just like the original, a 2-seater convertible. That car was a big deal when it came out but sales dropped badly after the first year and it was discontinued in 2005. It was also way too expensive for a modern Ford and was only available with a thirsty V8.

I think a new Thunderbird based on Ford’snew EV platform would be a really cool way for Ford to embrace the future and a gutsy display for that new platform…

But who am I, really…

  1. Pretty bold “…..will turn a profit….” on your part. Nothing is on the market with the volume models yet, but sure, let’s make a niche model.

  2. Still my favorite concept is from about 20 years ago – the Ford 427 concept. If they built close that concept, I would have been first in line to buy. The production model became the Ford Fusion, a respectable car.
