In a very unsurprising move, VW just decided to cancel the ID.7 sedan for the US.
It was introduced last year and was soon delayed for North America. It is now officially canceled. However, it is still sold in many other countries. The “delay” a few months ago was just a preview of what came today.
Back in May, the delay was officially due to “market dynamics to changes”.
As well as a high demand for the car in Europe. The US model was expected to be offered with one motor with 282HP and a 77.0 kWh battery good for over 300 miles of range. The starting price was rumored to be around $50,000. Which was a lot. Especially considering the other EV sedans on the market are already a lot cheaper. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 starts at $38,000 these days. And the Tesla Model 3 RWD at $42,500. That $50,000 VW would have had a tough time at that price.
I guess it was too late to cancel the $60,000 ID. Buzz Plus many potential buyers have been waiting for it for a long, long time. Still, I am sure the price and a 234-mile range will scare many.
While the Tesla Model 3 is still very popular, the Ioniq 6 isn’t that huge of a hit. By last October, sales were up to around 10,000 units. Not that bad really, but not close to the Ioniq 5.
Audi is also getting ready to launch their new A6 e-Tron EV sedan. Which is also a hatchback, just like the ID.7. I guess VW figured one EV sedan is enough for North America. This time, the official reason for canceling the VW ID.7 is “market conditions”. A very vague statement that includes everything.
But not all is lost since “electric vehicles continue to be a core part of Volkswagen’s long-term product strategy, and new electric models will continue to be introduced for this market.”
Whenever that is…
A few months ago, I actually saw an ID7 driving around Chattanooga. I immediately knew what it was, but really wasn’t that impressed over the design at all.
drop a hybrid 2.0L in it and send it. There…. fixed the problem.
