Mazda CX-20.

Last Updated:

It seems Mazda is getting ready to replace the old CX-3crossover with a new model called the CX-20.

The name CX-20 was trademarked back in 2023 and hasn’t been used yet. As we know, a brand new CX-5 is also due out in just a few days.

Both new models are rumored to use a new Hybrid powertrain from Mazda, unlike the new CX-50 Hybrid, which uses a Toyota powertrain. The new Mazda tech will power 60% to 75% of all their models by the end of the decade. The new “in-house” developed Hybrid system will use a larger battery than the Toyota system, while not being a PHEV.

As Mazda seems to be moving away for good from regular sedans and hatchbacks. There is so far no replacement planned for the Mazda 3. The current generation was introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show over 6 years ago…

As for the CX-30, it is almost as old and was introduced in late 2019. It is actually getting a little bit more popular every year, with sales reaching over 77,000 in the US in 2023. A new design with a Hybrid powertrain would obviously be even more popular.

Mazda has made a $150 million investment in Thailand, where the new CX-20 is rumored to be built. The illustration above shows a new model that follows closely Mazda’s current design language. Which might be pretty realistic since the brand doesn’t seem to be ready to come up with anything looking really new and different.

So far, and especially with recent crazy tariffs on everything, it seems we would not see the new CX-20 i the US anytime soon. However, I would hope Mazda is hard at work on a CX-30 replacement for the US and other markets…

  1. It will be quite a bit shorter than that illustration. The CX3 was built on the Mazda supermini sized Mazda2 hatch, that was here in the US for a spell. The CX-30 and Mazda3 sedan/hatch have never sold that well here. The CX-30 does better of the three. But there are three big problems in those cars: they’re very tight inside for their length; the ride quality isn’t great because they have a torsion beam rear suspension (Mazda is really in denial about this); and their fuel economy isn’t great. A hybrid would only solve one of those issues.

  2. It is disappointing if Mazda is only dedicating production to only CUVs and SUVs. Their overall designs are looking more stylish and luxurious without looking obsolete. But unfortunately, the market in the United States favors those two body styles. Unfortunately my next vehicle purchase will be in the used market or hopefully CPO

  3. Its too bad Mazda couldn’t find a way to bring the CX20 stateside as I think it would do very well. Not sure how reliable this is but I heard from someone actually works for a Mazda supplier that 2026 will in fact be the last year for the 3 in the states and a new CX 30 will debut in late 26 as a 2027.

  4. All of Mazdas prototypes they show off look so good and fully capable of making afforadabke production versions. Instead they consistently choose to produce mild mannered cars that are so poorly passive. I’ve owned 7 Mazdas and they always come so close to making wonderful cars but their top level guys choose the safe road thinking they know what Americans wants yet keep.missing the mark..year after year.

  5. I’ve owned many Mazdas. 99 626, 04 3, 07 Miata, 15 3, 17 3 (still own) and 23 CX-30 (still own). By far CX -30 is the worse! Everything about it sucks, build quality, suspension, gas mileage is just ok. Coincidence, no. It’s the only one I have owned NOT made in Japan. All the ones before have been fantastic! Love them.

Love my 2017 mazda 3 so much I have had offers over market value to buy it from me and I have declined because it’s such a great car and it’s a manual. CX-30 on the other hand, we can’t wait to get rid of.
