Nissan Xterra.

Nissan has shown the next-generation Xterra SUV at a dealer meeting in Las Vegas just a few days ago.

Apparently, it will be a hybrid model using a V6. Which actually sounds pretty good. And something that could be much smoother than the current crop of Toyota’s 4-cylinder powered Hybrids. Nissan could also offer a PHEV version with up to 75 miles of EV range. Which would probably be great for most people. It could also mean the standard offering could be the PHEV and not a regular hybrid. Who knows…

The next Xterra would be built on a “new” body-on-frame platform. It And be manufactured in the US in the same plant as the current Nissan Frontier pickup. However, that also could sound like the Xterra would use a platform similar to the Frontier and not an all-new one.

The bad news is the release date, which is so far scheduled for the 2027 model year. And that is a long, long time. The new Xterra will be part of a product blitz that will include 20 new or updated models between now and spring 2027.

I know Nissan fans will applaud the return of the Xterra, but a new off-road SUV will not be that popular. What Nissan really needs is a new Rogue, and that’s coming as well.

Apparently, the new off-road EV Nissan mentioned a few months ago is still on the table (2nd image). It just won’t be called “Xterra”…

  1. the 2026 model year vehicles are already showing up in dealerships… so, it’ll be here in a year? that’s not so long.

  2. I’m not so sure that a new off road SUV wouldn’t be popular. Ford sold over 100 000 Broncos last year and I’m sure those are higher profit margin than another generic soft roader. If they have the factory capacity, they would probably do very well with a real off road truck. Very popular and lucrative segment right now. It just can’t be a 1/2 ass attempt. It needs to be much more than a Rogue with a skid plate.

  3. This is great news and a new truck based Xterra would sell well doing wonders for the brand. However this is all contingent on Nissan surviving until 2027. I currently give them a 50/50 chance of making it that far.

  4. Already purchased June the new 2025 Armada Platinum (called Patrol over Europe) amazing machine quality interior, dominate on road strong engine it is Nissan GTR engine 415 HP and 515 of torque , smooth ride. It is 4×4 took it of road awesome control. One thing I like at night you are approching the vehicle light turn on even you hadn’t use the key safety for. family. I imagine how strong going to the Xterra going to be. The technology is here. For those reading this. The quality has arrived. I you don’t believe me go check it out. I know you still believed in American car & SUV which all the part are made different country
The Armada is been built in only one place. JAPAN

  5. Xterra should have come back long ago. Almost too late now. Nissan may not be around in 27.

  6. Yes I’m looking forward to it, has to have a standard transmission as well, been waiting a long time for this.

  7. Would love to see a new Xterra and consider a purchase.Got my new 2025 Armada and love it! Keeping my 2019 Armada because it’s too good of a vehicle to let go.

  8. The did great with the frontier v6, we don’t want a hybrid or an electric off-road vehicle. That’s just stupid. Oh let’s go to the trail but only have a 75 mile range. Car engineers have lost touch with common sense.

  9. Nissan should scrape cvt gearbox and replace with something else. Bad experience for cvt. Sold 3 cars with cvt from Nissan because of cvt failure after 95k kms

  10. A new Xterra should go back to the original formula. Remember, “Everything you need, nothing you don’t.” Anything new will be weighed down with all the electronic gizmos that driver’s today insist on, and it will jack the price up beyond what the younger buyers can afford, and it will become, a Rogue with a skid plate. I’ve owned a2003 and a 2006. I told my kids to bury me in my Xterra, because it’s never been in a hole it couldn’t get me out of. Nissan won’t use the new Xterra to get out of a hole unless they go back to the original formula.

  11. My daughter owned an Xterra and when I visited her, I fell in love with it. I now own an 04 SE model. Its been through hell with a different owner and is rough around the edges but definitely worth keeping. I only mind working on it myself when it comes to electrical stuff. Im not a wiring knowledgeable person so I have to take it in if ever I need this done. My daddy raised me under the hood of a Malibu and ive been in love with the smell of grease and oil, and the feel of steel since then. I take care of my X and she take care of me. I would really love to have the next Gen but have to agree with every comment I’ve read about bringing back the stick shift. My X will do anything I get into, in 2WD but…4WD would be nice with a manual shift to control better.
Hey Nissan…pay attention to what your consumers are asking from you. It will go a long way in the end. So long as you make it that far…
