Xpeng P7.

Another day, another impressive new Chinese EV. This time, it is called the P7 from the Xpeng brand.

This is a very modern sedan design that looks like it’s trying pretty hard to match the practicality of an SUV. Just like the recently introduced Xiami XU7, it has features no one offers over here. Like door panels with capacitive smart buttons that can be programmed to control other features, like the glovebox opening or seat controls.

Two batteries are offered, with 74.9kWh or 92.2kWh capacity. It supports fast charging at the amazing speed of 486kW. That means a 10% to 10% charging time of just over 11 minutes. That’s right, 11 minutes! However, even in China, I assume chargers that fast are not everywhere…

RWD, RWD long range, and AWD trims are available. With EV ranges of 438, 512, or 468 miles. The CLTC range numbers are usually about 20% more optimistic than our EPA. That still would be around 400 miles for the RWD long-range model if sold over here.

Pricing has not been announced yet, but it is supposed to compete against the Tesla Model 3. Which means it is cheaper than a Model Y or Xiaomi SUV.

It seems just a few years ago when Tesla’s EVs were ahead of everyone else. While they are still competitive in many countries, China will not be one of them for long. All that is planned from Tesla in China is a longer Model Y with 6 seats and the sportier model that has been expected for months.

That will not be enough to compete with these new Chinese models.

Good luck…

  1. Anonymous styling, but handsome. The interior is atrocious, though.

Why can’t the Chinese get past these Tesla carbon copy interiors? China has the power to do better than this. They have all kinds of rich history and culture to draw upon. Why make all of your new cars look like the third rate crappiest EVs sold in the US?

  2. Still looks more modern than any of the Honda/Acura sedans available in the US. I really like that blue color, which is another sore point – Honda and their colors. I hope Acura does better with that RSX that just debuted.
