2028 Cadillac XT5.

Cadillac has just announced it will be extending the XT5 production in the US. With a new generation is coming in 2027, for the 2028 model year.

Of course, the anti-EV crowd will probably rejoice at the weird news. Claiming that, for some reason, a rough 4-cylinder engine is a better fit for a luxury brand than a quiet and powerful EV powertrain.

The Cadillac XT5 has already been redesigned, and a new generation, pictured above, has been on sale in China since August 2024. It would be a 3-year-old car sold as a new generation if it made it to the US in mid-2027. The new generation is about 3 inches longer than the current model and is only powered by a 2.0 2.0-liter turbo, like almost everything else in the world these days.

The old XT5 is still selling in OK numbers in the US, after 9 years on the market. It never looked really modern, and its interior, especially, was never up to what is expected of a Cadillac. And somehow, Cadillac managed to sell over 26,000 of these last year. Which was even better than 2023. Of course, things were better when it came out with 68,000 units sold in 2017. Of course, the newer and much better Cadillac Lyriq is more popular these days, with over 28,000 units sold last year. And the new, more affordable Optiq will probably be even more popular.

I guess with numbers still over 20,000, GM figured out a new XT5 is still worth it. With limited investment, they can sell the same car they sell in China. Which, in 2027, will probably be due for some mid-cycle changes anyway.

So far, the official word is: “In response to strong demand for the nameplate, we made the decision to keep XT5 as part of our portfolio, which is stronger than ever with a mix of new EV and recently refreshed gas-powered vehicles like Escalade. We look forward to launching the next-gen XT5 in the second half of 2027.”

I think the new Chinese generation is a very bland design. With the same old deign language they’ve been using for years, and it doesn’t really look more modern than the 9-year-old car we have now. While the interior is a vast improvement (anything would have been), it looks super busy and just not very classy anyway.

Or maybe that’s just the ghastly red interior in the photos…

  1. Until they fix the long term battery degradation issue, I think many people will be in favor of a non EV option.

  2. ^ There is no long term battery degradation ‘issue’. As EV’s age people are finding that batteries are lasting much, much longer than anticipated—much longer than traditional ICE parts begin to need replacing. I’m not ‘big oil bad’ stan, but they have lobbyists and PR agencies for a reason, and they’ve made many consumers afraid of battery degregation because it couldn’t be proven. But hey, it’s a win for me—I get to drive a used BMW with a 10 year / 100k mile warranty.

  3. I think they’re figuring with the disappearance of the $7500 The government is throwing at EV buyers. They need some gas vehicles.

  4. “ghastly”?! That red interior is AWESOME. What do you want? Black, grey or beige? I wish more automakers would offer interesting interior colors.

  5. Cadillac’s sales numbers this year are their highest in more than a decade. Driven by their lineup of EVs. Design vehicles that people want, and they will buy them. And Caddy’s focus on large SUV EVs is paying off.

  6. Your right shouldn’t be a 4 cylinder . Should be a V 6. And the hell with the electric shit.

  7. I would buy it if they throw a 3.6 liter V6 under the hood. If not . Off to the Acura dealership.

  8. Outside of the coastal elites and tree huggers, car buyers in mid America don’t want to have to deal with sparsely available charging stations and expensive infrastructure in their homes. Eliminate your ICE offerings and you cease to become an option for these consumers.

  9. I think the author shouldn’t have written this email. He is obviously EV Biased and doesn’t realize the pollutants from an EV (Substantial Tire and break pollution), the energy, to dig, transfer and build the batteries, the inability to recycle them earnestly, and of course that electricity doesn’t come from thin air

Sure a EV rides smoother (trans) and quieter. but you give up a lot of convenience
The EV truth will become apparent. The bigger joke is, in 10 years hydrogen will replace ev’s.

Net, net this is a good looking vehicle.

  10. I think it’s a shame that GM has squandered such an opportunity to make Cadillac their EV Luxury arm and Buick their ICE luxury arm in the U.S.

  11. I have a 2018 XT5 with 6 motor, 235 hp,I will not upgrade until you have this kind of power.

  12. The sentence structure is terrible in this article just like the review. Reviews should be what’s new regarding a vehicle. I don’t need someone’s opinion, I will make my own.

The fact that there are some new design features on the outside, the inside mirrors that of the Lyriq. There doesn’t need to be a drastic change to an already popular vehicle over the last few years.

Obviously the author is pro electric and anti-gas… they probably have red hair, like the ghastly red interior, but I’m sure that’s ok.
