2029 Dodge Durango.

Last Updated:

We are finally getting a bit of news about a brand new Dodge Durango generation. However, it apparently won’t happen before 2029.

The new Durango will be part of a massive $13 billion investment from Stellantis in North America. Which is pretty much their only profitable market these days.

A brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee is also due out in 2028, and will share the same STLA platform as the new Dodge Durango. Production of the next Durango will be done in the same plant as the current one.

2028 or 2029 is a pretty long time. It’s even really weird. As they mention the redesign of a 15-year-old model that is still 4 years away! I mean, how long does it take? Have they even started work on it yet?

So many things can happen in 4 years… It seems Stellantis is playing it safe and will offer the new Dodge Durango as a Hybrid and possibly an EV as an option. The STLA platform is pretty flexible and can adapt rather quickly to these market changes. The current Durango is already 15 years old, and even though it is still quite popular, that will not last forever. Dodge has also killed every powertrain except the V8 for this year. Which might not be for everyone.

The next generation will have to be quite different to attract more families. Not everyone wants a V8, and that market will be shrinking very soon.
Despite the current political climate, the US EV market is predicted to grow by 25.46% between 2025 and 2033. (Market Data Forecast Oct 2025). The EV market is not growing as fast as previously expected, but it is still growing every single year. That means that no matter what, a new Durango will have to offer an EV powertrain, at least as an option, by 2029.

The illustration above shows what a next-generation Dodge Durango could look like.

In other Stellantis news, they have announced the new Cherokee and Compass will be built in the US and therefore available in North America. It was previously thought that the new Compass might not make it over here.

And sadly, there was zero news about Chrysler. Which was supposed to be getting a new SUV based on the Wagoneer S and future Durango. Since it was originally planned as an EV only, it probably needs some work to offer a Hybrid powertrain and could be delayed. Or worse…. Same thing with the Jeep Recon…

And again, they are mentioning a new Dodge coming out in 4 years, with nothing before. Expect a new, smaller pickup. Also, years away..

This isn’t great news.

  1. I’m going to let everyone in on an open secret: Stellantis sucks. I love Chrysler Group and even PSA Peugeot-Citroën, but Stellantis is bad news.

Carlos Tavares was not a good leader of the company and his strategic blunders will last an exceptionally long time. Legitimately I cannot think of something good that happened under his tenure.

Carlos Tavares was a champion of profiteering not building cars or innovation—and he wasn’t even great at that. He found it his personal mission to end the V8 for Chrysler Group. He focused all of his efforts on profit even when it meant setting yourself up for less profit or even losses later. Very short term in approach.
