Lincoln needs something like this.

Many of us remember the good old Lincoln Continental. Which, which, before the Town Car, was THE big Lincoln sedan. Before it became, for a few generations, their smaller sedan offering. What most of us don’t remember is the 2-door coupe version of the Continental. The illustration above shows what a next-generation Lincoln Continental Coupe could look like in some bizarro world where people all of a sudden would start buying large 2-door cars…

Of course, the old first and 2nd generations were 2-door coupes, the 2nd one being the most famous as the fabulous Continental Mark II. A high-end luxury coupe produced for only 2 years, 1956 and 1957. And yet, one of the most significant American car designs in history.

The 3rd generation just looked weird and wasn’t as high-end as the previous model with a 40% reduction in price to boost sales.

The 2-door Continental was actually available all the way to 1981 and the 3rd generation. By that time, it was basically the same car as the Continental Mark VI, which was only offered as a 2-door coupe. In 1981, the Lincoln Continental was renamed the Town Car, and the 2-door coupe was canceled. As we know, there has been no coupe version of the Town Car.

The illustration above shows a design influenced by the 1960s Continental, with a chrome grille that actually covers the whole front end of the car. A classic yet very modern look that could work today if  the market for a large 2-door luxury car still existed.

You never know. If rumors are true, we will have a brand-new Chevrolet Impala before the end of next year. Joining a next-generation Cadillac CT5 sedan. A new Infiniti Q50, and the 2026 4-door version of the 2026 Dodge Charger. It also seems Chrysler is considering a new sedan as well.

That sure feels like big sedans could be making a comeback. Are big 2-door coupes next?

  1. A big 2-door coupe can work for Lincoln. Because they need an attention getter, and it’s a great place to also use EREV that’s upcoming for F-series.
