Mazda 3 about to become Mazda 3e.

While the Mazda 3 might not get a direct successor, it is working on a new model called the 3e. Which, of course, will be a new compact EV.

Last year, we already saw a successor to the Mazda 6 sedan in the form of the new Mazda 6e. It was originally a Chinese market model, then sold in Europe and other countries as well. It has so far been getting great reviews from various European journalists.

Later, it also introduced the new EZ60 in China. A new EV that will be exported later to Europe as well.

These 2 new EVs have been conceived with Mazda’s Chinese partner Changan. It seems both are working on a 3rd new EV model. A more compact car that would basically replace the Mazda 3 in the lineup. Just like the 6e is seen by many as a replacement for the good old Mazda 6 sedan.

The illustration above shows what a new compact 3e could look like. One with a little bit of a crossover flair, since that’s what the kids buy these days…

Just like the 6e and EZ60, the new 3e will not be coming to the US. For a few reasons, but mainly because it is built in China. That means the only new Mazda we are getting soon is the new 2026 Mazda CX-5. You know, the one that almost looks exactly like the old one outside. While trying very hard to feel like a Tesla inside.

Next year, we will finally get a proper EV with a decent range from Mazda. One that will again look like an SUV. And it will not be related to the Chinese EZ60.

As far as the 3 is concerned, it is probably dead after 2026. With no replacement in sight. At least over here…

  1. Mazda is in a tough spot. Its not big enough to have a lot of regional specialization. The 6 didn’t sell well enough, but the 3 was built for Asian and European road standards (ie. too small for Americans. That means we essentially we get a bunch of SUVs. Blah. If they’d make the 3 with interior room comparable to a Civic or Corolla, it would probably do well.
