Genesis G80 – The Electric Comeback Could Be Closer Than You Think.

Genesis’ EV strategy around the G80 sedan has clearly shifted gears — but the story is far from over.
The “Electrified G80”, introduced for the 2021 model year, arrived about a year after the current-generation G80 sedan. It was elegant, smooth, and properly quick, with the kind of interior refinement Genesis has become known for. Yet despite strong reviews and a competitive range, it reportedly sold only around 140 units in the U.S. in 2024. That effectively killed it, at least for now.
Low awareness, limited availability, and especially a huge price increase over the gas versions are to blame. And in a market that still leans heavily toward SUVs, a luxury electric sedan was always going to be a tougher sell. Still, canceling it doesn’t mean Genesis has abandoned the segment.
The Next-Generation G80: EV-Only No More?
For a while, the next-generation G80 was rumored to be EV-only, aligning with Genesis’ earlier all-electric ambitions. That would have positioned the sedan as a direct rival to European electric luxury models and signaled a bold shift for the brand.
But those plans appear to have evolved.
Now we’re hearing:
- The next G80 is still several years away
- It may not be EV-only
- Hybrid and possibly range-extended EV (REV) variants are increasingly likely
Genesis is preparing to roll out hybrid versions across most of its lineup. That move gives the brand flexibility as EV demand fluctuates globally. It also reflects a broader industry trend: automakers are hedging their bets instead of committing to a single powertrain strategy.
That means the next G80 could offer multiple configurations — traditional hybrid, plug-in hybrid, full EV — depending on the market. From a business standpoint, that makes far more sense than limiting the sedan to one propulsion system.
Europe: A Different Strategy

While the U.S. market cooled on the electric G80, Europe may tell a very different story.
Genesis is expanding aggressively this year in:
- France
- Spain
- Italy
- The Netherlands
In those countries, the lineup is reportedly all-electric, including:
- Genesis GV70
- Genesis GV80
- Genesis G80
An EV sedan is essential in Europe, where emissions regulations are stricter, and public charging infrastructure is expanding rapidly. Competing with BMW and Mercedes-Benz on their home turf requires a strong electric offering. Especially in the executive sedan segment.
Interestingly, Europe might even receive the next-generation G80 before America does. If Genesis sees stronger traction overseas, the U.S. could end up waiting longer. Or getting a different mix of powertrains altogether.
Design: Moving Toward Concept-Car Drama
The upcoming G80 is expected to adopt a sleeker, more modern look inspired by recent Genesis concept vehicles based on the larger Genesis G90 platform.
These include:
- The Genesis X Coupe concept
- The Genesis X Convertible concept
- The Genesis X Speedium Coupe
Expect:
- Lower, more sculpted bodywork
- Slimmer two-line lighting signatures
- A more dramatic fastback silhouette
- A cleaner, tech-forward interior layout
Genesis has been steadily refining its “Athletic Elegance” design language, and the next G80 could be its most cohesive expression yet. A longer wheelbase, shorter overhangs, and a more cab-rearward stance would give it a stronger presence. Especially if paired with flush door handles and aerodynamic wheel designs optimized for EV efficiency.
If the production model captures even 70% of the concept cars’ visual drama, it could instantly become one of the most distinctive sedans in the luxury segment.
The real question isn’t whether the G80 survives.
It’s whether its next chapter will finally deliver the global breakthrough Genesis has been aiming for.
