Coud the Crown Victoria return as a new 2028 Ford sedan?

It seems the good old Ford Crown Victoria still has many friends. And some of them keep asking Ford Motor Company for its return, which is kind of funny. But also, not really possible. Unless…
Unless Ford decides to build a new large sedan based on that new “universal” EV platform we keep hearing about. That could fit recent rumors of a new sub-$40,000 sedan. At a recent dealer meeting in Las Vegas, Ford even mentioned five new products under $40,000, with at least one being a sedan. These are expected to offer a choice of powertrains, including gas, hybrid, or EV.
Which is confusing, since the new platform is reportedly EV-only. Unless Ford has quietly developed a way to support hybrid versions as well. It also sounds like most of these upcoming vehicles could be based on that architecture, pointing to a major shift in how Ford builds its future lineup.
It was also mentioned these vehicles would be all-new models, not redesigned versions of current cars and trucks. And unfortunately, they are all planned to have new names.
That means bad news for Crown Victoria fans. The illustration above shows a modern large Ford sedan wearing the Crown Victoria name. Something that might never happen…
Still, these models are planned before 2030. And while that may not sound far away, four years is a long time in the car business. Plans change, strategies evolve, and automakers often pivot based on market demand and competition. 4 years is plenty of time for Ford suits to change their minds about names. Or anything else.
There’s also a growing shift back toward sedans, especially in EV form, as buyers look for better efficiency, range, and affordability compared to SUVs. If that trend continues, Ford could find itself rethinking its strategy sooner than expected.
So maybe, just maybe, the spirit of the Crown Victoria could return in a new form: electrified, modern, and surprisingly affordable.
I say, let’s dream the dream.

Here are some images of the Ford Crown Victoria through the ages.
First as a luxury version of the classic Ford LTD. Then finally redesigned in the 1990s, looking quite slick and modern. And very influenced by the Taurus.
The final version was the most boring. A heavy refresh of the previous one that actually made it look almost exactly like the Mercury version, the Grand Marquis.
