2027 Lexus NX preview.

Lexus is getting ready for a mid-cycle facelift for the NX Compact SUV. The 2027 model will receive a new front end and slightly revised rear end. Maybe a few small changes to the interior as well. It will actually be pretty minor stuff. Especially for a model that is almost due for a new generation.

The current, second-generation Lexus NX debuted in June 2021. Yet for many enthusiasts, it already feels older than it actually is. That perception probably comes from how closely the current model resembles the original 2014 NX. Despite riding on a completely new platform and offering improved tech, hybrid efficiency, and refinement, the design evolution was very subtle. To most humans, it didn’t scream “all-new.”

However, Lexus has no reason to rush a replacement. The NX continues to grow in popularity worldwide and remains one of the brand’s best-selling SUVs. Strong hybrid demand and Lexus’s reputation for reliability have only strengthened its position in the competitive luxury compact SUV segment.

If early design speculation proves accurate, the next-generation, (illustration above), may borrow more heavily from the styling direction of the new Lexus ES. That would mean sharper lines, a more angular profile, reduced chrome, and a cleaner, more modern aesthetic. It’s a controversial shift. One that redefines traditional “Lexus luxury” into something more minimalist and architectural.

Not everyone is convinced this new direction will resonate with loyal buyers. The upcoming ES redesign has already sparked debate among longtime customers who appreciated the softer, more elegant approach of previous generations.

Mechanically, the next NX is expected to share components with the Toyota RAV4. A hybrid powertrain could become standard, reflecting Toyota and Lexus’s continued commitment to electrification. Given market trends, plug-in hybrid and possibly fully electric variants are also very plausible.

If Lexus blends bold design with hybrid efficiency and potential EV capability, the next-generation NX could become its most important compact SUV yet. The big question remains: will modern minimalism attract new buyers, or alienate existing Lexus loyalists?

For now, and maybe for as long as a couple of years. The Lxus NX will just look a little bit newer. With maybe a Hybrid powertrain standard. Or maybe that next-generation Hybrid system Toyota has been talking about might be ready for the upcoming refresh.

We’ll see…

  1. Lexus should do something. The NX looks old compared to rivals in its size. Enough of the massive spindle grill. They just need to be careful of using too much piano or gloss black (inside and out). Chrome works if its sparingly used and the trim is thinner. Where Lexus really screwed up is on the inside of the ES – no physical buttons and knobs.

  2. The NX is the best seller, by far, in its class and so they don’t want to rock the boat too much. I think the front headlamps will be the split variety like the new ES and slightly more dramatic and fresh than what you have here. Beyond that I expect it to move the Lexus logo maybe to the top of the hood and have a grille mesh pattern more similar to the RAV4 Core models’ grille.
