Alfa Romeo Is Betting on Yet Another SUV as U.S. Sales Collapse.

Just a few days ago, Stellantis confirmed a new model for the Alfa Romeo brand. While everyone was waiting to finally see the next-generation Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan or the new Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV, Stellantis revealed something else entirely.

And yes, it is yet another SUV. However, this one will apparently be smaller than the current Alfa Romeo Tonale, while still larger than the European-market Alfa Romeo Junior. That seems like a lot of overlapping SUVs, especially in Europe where compact crossovers already dominate the market. In the U.S., this new model could end up replacing the very slow-selling Tonale altogether. Like most upcoming Stellantis products, it will reportedly be offered with hybrid and fully electric powertrains.

The problem is that Alfa Romeo’s identity in America was never supposed to rely entirely on small crossovers. The brand returned to the U.S. with exciting products like the Giulia and Stelvio, vehicles that actually gave buyers something with personality and different from the usual German luxury choices. Those models helped rebuild the brand’s image and reminded enthusiasts why Alfa Romeo once had such a passionate following.

Since then, however, momentum has almost completely disappeared. The Tonale arrived years too late in an overcrowded segment and never really found a clear audience. It was not affordable enough to attract mainstream buyers and not premium enough to seriously challenge rivals from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, or Audi.

Without a new Giulia or Stelvio, the future of Alfa Romeo in North America seems increasingly uncertain. After leaving the market decades ago, the company never fully managed to convince large numbers of American buyers after its return. Sales have now collapsed to under 6,000 units annually in the U.S., compared to almost 24,000 sales back in 2018.

That is not just disappointing , it is quite alarming for a luxury brand trying to rebuild itself. This downward spiral will likely continue until genuinely new products arrive, and those key models keep getting delayed.

I am not sure this newly announced SUV alone can turn things around. Alfa Romeo desperately needs the delayed next-generation Giulia and Stelvio to reconnect with buyers and restore excitement around the brand. Without them, Alfa risks becoming just another small player lost inside the massive Stellantis portfolio.

Good luck to them, I guess…
