This New MG 07 Sedan Makes U.S. Car Prices Look Crazy.

The 07 sedan will apparently be the new flagship for the MG brand, and it actually looks quite attractive. MG is one of the Chinese-owned brands that has become surprisingly successful in Europe, with over 300,000 vehicles sold there last year. In many European countries, MG is probably still seen by some buyers as a familiar European brand, despite its Chinese ownership under SAIC Motor. That lingering British identity still seems to help the brand quite a bit. Especially with older buyers who still remember MG sports cars from decades ago.

The new 07 sedan is based on a dedicated EV platform. However, a PHEV version will also be available. Which could make it even more appealing in markets where charging infrastructure is still developing. It’s actually hard to judge the car’s exact size from these photos, but the previous generation MG7 was around 190 inches long. That places it right between a Honda Civic sedan and a Honda Accord in size. That also means the new MG could compete directly with many midsize family sedans sold globally.

No interior photos have been published yet, but chances are the cabin will feel much more upscale than what you’d find in the current Honda Civic. Chinese brands have become extremely good at delivering impressive interiors. Most of them packed with technology, large screens and premium-looking materials at surprisingly low prices. Speaking of low prices, the new sedan is expected to start at around $22,500 in China, while even the more expensive versions should remain under $30,000. Once again, this highlights the huge difference between car prices in China and the U.S. market. At these prices, the MG could seriously undercut many Japanese and European rivals while still offering far more equipment.

Of course, many people will immediately notice the obvious resemblance to the Porsche Taycan. A similar sleek silhouette has already inspired several Chinese sedans, including the hugely popular Xiaomi SU7. Still, the new MG looks quite successful visually, with clean proportions and a sporty stance. Honestly, even at twice the price, the design would probably still look competitive. Unlike some copycat designs from the past, this one actually feels polished and modern. And again, this is cheaper than a Honda Civic!

The 07 could easily become a strong seller in Europe, especially in England where MG continues to gain momentum. The brand already ranks surprisingly high in sales charts there. Thanks in large part to models like the MG HS SUV, which sold over 30,000 units last year in the UK alone. MG’s combination of modern styling, generous equipment, long warranties, and low pricing seems to resonate with buyers looking for alternatives to more expensive mainstream brands. The company is also expanding its EV lineup very quickly across Europe.

And who knows, with Canada now allowing a limited number of Chinese-built vehicles into the country each year, the new MG sedan could eventually find its way into North America as well. If that ever happens, it would certainly shake up the affordable EV and PHEV sedan market in a very big way. A stylish sedan like this, priced far below most competitors, could attract plenty of attention from younger buyers who are currently priced out of the new car market.

  1. Is the U.S. allowing Chinese-built vehicles sold in Canada … to be registered in the U.S.? If so, the floodgates will be opening. And that doesn’t even account for Chinese companies planning to manufacture in the U.S. (like Geely with Volvo, etc.)

  2. Chinese cars are only a little bit cheaper, even without tariffs. Chinese cars cost crazy low prices in China due to getting subsidized everything from the seller to the buyer… But, take the BYD Dolphin/Seagull. In China it’s $10-14,000. If it came to the USA, it would be about $24,000 when you do currency conversions and costs to federalize. The Chevrolet Bolt can already be had brand new for around that price with more range and more than 100 horsepower.

We all forget that the average monthly income is about $1400 in China, so things have to cost a lot less also.

I think Chinese cars are really at the inflection point where price isn’t the biggest draw. It opens the door to new customers, but what will compel people is high quality, good design and experience… and some of the latest Chinese cars are competitive without being cheap.
