Ford Mustang Convertible EV.

The newly redesigned Ford Mustang just had a disastrous year. Maybe it’s time for some rethinking.
Yes, I know Jim Farley famously said last year “One thing I can promise, is that we will never make an all-electric Mustang”. It’s one thing to say “We’re not ready for an electric Mustang”. Or “Not for a few years”. “maybe in a while”. But “never” is a moronic statement.
Especially after the horrible year that “new’ Mustang just had. Maybe a real new Mustang could have helped like it was supposed to be early in its development. Before they decided to produce a new model that wasn’t really new. Spending some cash on new models goes a long way.
To add insult to injury, the Mustang Mach-e EV was more popular than the regular Ford Mustang in 2024. And I cannot really see any way things could turn around. That regular Mustang won’t be much more attractive or new next year. While sales of the Mach-e increase every year.
Saying there will never be a Mustang EV is basically saying you are killing the Mustang soon. It means that in a few years when almost all other new cars will be EVs, you will cancel the car rather than give it a modern electric powertrain.
2 door sporty cars aren’t popular these days anyway. And I’m not sure an electric Mustang could save the name as much as the Mach-e. Later next year, a new generation Mach-e is scheduled to be launched with a 2nd “SUV Coupe” body style. Something that will probably look even more like 4 four-door Mustang.
Ford seems caught in a tailspin of strange decisions and no clear vision for the future. It can’t really afford to say “never” to anything right now…
An EV platform allows designers to come up with any proportions they want. the illustration above shows what an electric 2-door Mustang convertible could look like. Keeping the Mustang’s traditional RWD coupe proportions.
I was all set to get a new Mustang… until I saw that interior. Ford – how could you?? Also, how come all of the “what it could look like” CGI’s on this site have the same Palm Springs house behind them?
