2026 Chevrolet Malibu.

A few of us were expecting a new Chevrolet Malibu for the 2025 model year. Unfortunately, this will have to wait and many tears will flow. The 2025 Chevrolet Malibu will be starting production at the end of this month, and no changes are planned. This means the 2025 Malibu will be a 10-year-old model by this time next year.

There were a few rumors last year about a new generation Malibu sedan. And almost nothing since. But it has been recently reported the next generation Malibu would actually use another platform than the current GM E2XX. Which was also used for the Opel Insignia/Buick Regal.

The next-generation Malibu is now rumored to use the VSS-F platform. That platform is currently being used for the Buick Encore and Envista. As well as the Chevrolet Trax and Trailblazer. This means the next Malibu will use a crossover platform. This makes sense since GM doesn’t offer FWD sedans in the US anymore.

But it also means the Malibu could be adopting a more crossover-like shape for its 10th generation. It would of course be larger and sleeker than other models currently based on that same platform. But a raised-up fastback sedan could be an attractive choice for many. Especially if offered with AWD s an option. And yes, it would be a lot like a modern Chevrolet version of the good old Honda Crosstour.

Another attractive option would be the addition of a PHEV option. The illustration above shows what a new crossover-type Chevrolet Malibu could look like.

I think this would be a great alternative to the current Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

  1. Old? You mean like the eternally reskinned Camry or Corolla? I dont mind the idea of the Malibu being raised slightly. It has been a bit low to the ground for entry/exit/seating position for the last couple generations. Toyota had an interesting idea with the Crown, yet its terrible execution makes that car feel like you’re sitting inside a tub. A butt ugly, heavy tub. But, enough of the cross overs already! Raise it just enough to give it optional mechanical AWD capability and so I dont hit my head getting in it each time. Or need a crane to pull me out. I’m not fat or old, but they’re not Ferraris. Then, make it a hybrid. No Buick Regal style hatch – cuz that just didn’t catch on, despite all the clamouring over Audi A7s and other nonsense. You might all like those sloping hatches, but none of you buy it. And the rest of us need decent sedans to stick around.

  2. Beancounting gone to far… Yeah it needs a sloping hatch – cuz Buick Regal was undesirable on its own.

  3. The Detroit news just announced GM announced. They are ending Malibu production at the end of this year to make room for the Bolt. Nothing about a new model of Malibu. Stupid move if you ask me!

  4. Aaaand it’s dead. GM announced today that Malibu production will end Nov. 2024. The Malibu’s assembly line space will be filled by the next gen Bolt EV. This and Subaru’s Legacy killed in the same week. So sad that sedans are going the way of the Dodo bird. But hey, I’m sure Honda and Toyota appreciate the additional customers. This SUV/CUV craze is leaving us with a very bland vehicle design landscape.
