Mazda EZ6 heading for Europe.

Last Updated:

The all-new Mazda EZ6 was shown last April in China. It is a car based on the Chinese Deepal SL03 from Chinese manufacturer and Mazda’s local pattern, Changan.

Until now, the new EZ6 was believed to be a Chinese market-only model. However, Mazda has announced the EZ6 would be a “global model” and will soon be introduced to the European market.

The bottom patent image shows the European version of the Mazda EZ6 with what seems to be a slightly different front end.

The new EZ6 is available as an EV, with a 375 miles range in the local test cycle. Or with a range extender that includes a 1.5 Liter engine. Which sounds similar to the good old Chevrolet Volt.

Most European countries are in the process of raising import taxes on Chinese cars and some manufacturers have already announced plans to build their cars in Europe to avoid tariffs. It is unclear if the EZ6 would be hit by huge tariffs, however, the car is indeed built in China. Mazda could also be planning to sell the Hybrid version and not the EV in Europe.

Of course, the North American market has not been mentioned as part of these “global sales”. Since tariffs from Chinese-built EVs would be too high and the sedan market is far from a sure thing over here.

Which is too bad. I kind of like the idea of a new electric Mazda 6.

A few months ago, before the EZ6 unveiling in China, Mazda had also trademarked a new logo for an upcoming model called “6 e”. We haven’t heard of the Mazda 6e since. At all…

Unless, 6e is the European name of the Mazda EZ6?

  1. Mazda’s naming conventions continue to underwhelm. I miss the days of 323, 626, and 929. Simple and sensible branding. “Easy”-6 sounds laughable. “Sex”-e sounds worse.
