Cadillac Convertible.

The illustration above shows what could happen if GM decided to compete with the new Mercedes CLE Convertible.
Cadillac is the most obvious choice to go against the new Mercedes. Since all new Cadillac models in the US will be based on the Ultium platform, it would of course be an EV, which is the perfect powertrain for a smooth and powerful, yet super quiet convertible.
This of course wouldn’t be a rebirth of the giant Eldorado of the past. But a car about the size of the current CLE would still be able to sit 4 humans. Especially if based on a much more space-efficient EV platform.
GM would also be the first to offer something like this. So far the only production EV Convertible is from Chinese-owned MG with its new Cyberster. Which is a sporty 2 seater.
At around $64,000, the new Mercedes CLE convertible is quite expensive. But Cadillac could probably come up with something close. Since they’re already offering the Lyriq and soon the Optiq EVs for under that price. Cadillac doesn’t need a convertible version of a $340,000 sedan like the Soleii concept we just saw a few weeks ago. A new Convertible priced under $60,000 could turn heads and do wonders for the brand’s image.
And no matter what, it would be more popular than the exclusive Celestiq. Again, it wouldn’t have to be a sports car or a $300,000 item. It would also be quite different from their current lineup of mostly SUVs, and a couple of older sedans that never looked that great to begin with.
Of course, it will be very interesting to see what they come up with the 2 new Ultium-based sedans we might see next year. A convertible based on the smaller one could make some sense.
Image builders are usually not best sellers…
