Mitsubishi Pajero.

Last Updated:

It looks like Mitsubishi might finally be working on a brand-new Pajero SUV.

This is a rumor that keeps coming back once in a while, every few years. The 1st generation Pajero was sold in the US as the Mitsubishi Montero. As were the 2nd and 3rd generation until 2006. A 4th generation was introduced that year and was produced until 2021. That one never made it over here.

The illustrations above from Japan show a really lame design. Which is exactly what Mitsubishi does NOT need in a world filled with SUVs from everyone. Last year, Mitsubishi released its plans for the company’s future. Which included a new model each year between 2026 and 2030. They also trademarked the names “Lancer Sportback” and “Montero”.

A new Montero would mean a pajero return to the North American market. And a Lancer Sportback is probably a small fastback SUV. The new Pajero/Montero is rumored to be a PHEV model. Which would be a great idea. And also makes sense since Mitsubishi already seems the Outlander Hybrid PHEV over here.

One rumor from Europe mentions a new pajero based on the new Nissan Patrol. but apparently, that has not been approved by Nissan who wants to keep that platform for their own brands.

Things might and probably will, change soon with the future Nissan/Honda merger. The current Outlander is related to the Nissan X-trail and Mitsubishi could still look for something from Nissan to share for a new Pajero. The merger also includes Mitsubishi. Which would give them direct access to Honda platforms like the new Honda Passport.

This is basically a huge mess for Nissan and Mitsubishi and things will probably be delayed quite a bit.

Let’s hope that crazy merger mess doesn’t affect Honda too much.

And let’s also hope for a much better-looking Mitsubishi Pajero than this…
