Cadillac Deville.

We just saw that GM will soon introduce a brand new Electra EV sedan for the Buick brand in China. The illustration above shows what a new the Cadillac DeVille large sedan based on GM’s Ultium platform could look like.

This is not just some crazy dream, as we already know Cadillac is planning not just one, but 2 new sedans based on the Ultium platform.

It shows a modern take on the classic large Cadillac sedan. One with a softer design language than the current “IQ” models. But not something like the $340,000 Celestiq. But something that would compete against the Lucid Air, Mercedes EQS, or even the BMW i7. For a bit less.

At various times in its long history, the DeVille series was available as a 4-door sedan, a 2-door coupe, and a 2-door convertible. Through many generations, the sedan was produced from 1949 to 2006. The 2-door coupe was dropped by 1993.

Up to 1977, the 2 door Coupe DeVille was often more popular than the sedan. Something hard to imagine these days when 2 door cars are very rare in general. These large sedans were always pretty popular for Cadillac, with over 100,000 units sold most years. Of course, sales started going down in the early 2000s. And while the CT6 was a better car than the DeVille ever was, sales numbers never went over 10,542 units back in 2017.

Of course, large sedans aren’t the most popular things these days, but I really think a larger Ultium-based Cadillac that reminds people of Cadillac’s rich history in a very modern way could really work in the EV age.

The Tesla Model S is a 13-year-old model. Sales are, of course, taking a nose dive after that long. As well as other current Tesla issues. Still, over 25,000 of them were sold last year. And Lucid has been a fantastic contender. I think there is a market for an under 100,000 large modern EV sedan from Cadillac.

From the responses I get every time I post one of these “Future Cadillac” illustrations, there seem to be a lot of Cadillac fans out there who just don’t like the current lineup at all. Something with more personality would really help.

Cadillac has shown sketches of possible future design directions, and they all look good. Let’s hope the upcoming new sedans we know they are working on will be a step in the right direction…

  1. I owned a 2004 special edition DeVille. It was the best car I ever owned unfortunately the block cracked on it in 2018 with 54,000 miles. It would be great to see a new Cadillac with a similar style as my 2004 Sedan sdeVille.

  2. I just drove the Cadillac CT5 Sedan. So Cadillac already has an Ice one. Should not be to hard to electrify the CT5

  3. Nice looking. But I’m so sick of all these ultra long sedans having tiny cabins and no headroom.

  4. I would love to see a sedan come back in the near future. Can’t stand the SUV’s but that’s just me.

  5. Len, I agree completely. Thats why I gave up on GM. Try the Genesis G90, it is a game changer. Plenty of headroom everywhere. The features Cadillac news about Buick intoducing it in China just pisses me off. Why cant they release it worldwide, especially for the US market. But still, I bet your right, little headroom.

  6. Please make a gas powered Cadillac sedan like the CT6. The problem with making a Cadillac EV sedan is that most people won’t be able to afford it. It’s a waste of time. Why build a Cadillac sedan that’s way over $100,000. Think about it! If you bring back a sedan like the CT6 mixed with a Deville or another older model, it will sell. It has to be gas powered though. The majority of people do not like electric vehicles.

  7. Had my fill of the 4.6 Northstar in my 2002 DTS 😞 … Worst engine too ever set between two fenders !!

  8. Bring back the gas power sedan. I had DeVille best car I ever had. Nothing like ride like Caddy

  9. My wife and I been buying new Cadillacs since the 1976 Seville came out. However the CT6 by far was the best ever made and we refuse to sell it until a large sedan is made for under 100,000, also the CT5 & CT4 are Tooo small.

  13. my question is…will there be quality in whatever Cadillac builds? EV or gas powered. Can’t justify all that money for garbage.

  14. Cadillac needs to produce a gas powered large car like the DeVille. I’m tired of seeing suv’s and manufacture the large car here in the USA. I’m tired of Cadillac offering their cars to China only.

  17. The biggest problem, as I see it is that, if Cadillac decided to build a car like this. They’d do the same nonsense as Buick and make it a “China only” vehicle ! I can’t even begin to express how angry I am that, the two best car brands in America, refuse to see their best vehicles here and, are shipping them all of to China ! What the hell is that about ??? Frankly it’s not only UNAMERICAN, it’s more like COMMUNISM ! I CALL BS !!!

  18. Waiting for the new Cadillac CT-6. Ì have the 2016 CT-6 . 64.000miles love the car. Style.proformance.

  19. Love my 2018 CT-6. Will drive untill I’m gone. Currently 85. Cadillac missing the boat. Large sedans are still “the cats meow “
