Buick Electra SUV.

These are not illustrations. They are official photos of the real thing. A brand new, upcoming EV SUV from Buick.

However, this is so far just a concept, and only for the Chinese market. Of course. But it’s coming!

The new Electra SUV will be joined by a sedan and a Minivan. Both will soon morph into production cars for the Chinese market. All 3 will be based on GM’s new Xiaoyao architecture.

So far, Buick isn’t selling any EVs in North America. And not even a hybrid. Their North American products are just regular ICE SUVs. While Cadillac and Chevrolet have been very successful with all their Ultium-based EV models. Buick has nothing to offer. Buick sales have been OK in the US, with over 183,000 cars sold last year alone. While Cadillac expects EVs to amount to 35% of their total sales number in 2025. While Chevrolet has already sold almost 40,000 EVs this year.

Buick is still much more popular in China than in North America, so it makes sense to spend money over there. But I think there would be nothing wrong with offering all their most advanced models in the US as well.

These new EVs could possibly add 20,000 or more units every year.

  1. I think this vehicle would do well as an introductory electric vehicle for the Buick brand in the U.S. It’s quite attractive and much better looking than Buick’s previous electric models (Electra E5 and Electra E4).

I do wish that Buick would either move their logo down to the blank front panel where a grille would be located if this was an ICE vehicle or adorn it with some kind of lighting signature (possibly the “ELECTRA” font or some other cool lighting treatment). That big expanse of blank space looks a little awkward and lacks character. Otherwise, I think this is a good looking vehicle that would make an impact in the SUV/crossover crazy U.S. market.

  2. Nice to see do more than selling to China. Of course Buick has to try harder because because of BYD . Hearing that the USA is buying in any numbers is a plus knowing it wasn’t for many years. Known as high end retirement car’s for like decades. You would have to work upwards as Buick was a affordable Cadillac but still expensive.
