Ford’s “Model T moment” a Big Whoop…

Ford did have an event today, as promised. That “Model T” moment, as they’ve been calling it for the past few weeks, turned out to be quite a letdown.

Yes, they did announce officially that they have been working on a new EV platform for the past 3 years. Something we’ve known for at least a year now. Other announcements, like how efficient the new platform will be, how cheap it will be to produce, etc… All of this was already mentioned many times.

What we all wanted to see was a car, a truck, anything. But something, what we got was a big serving of “nothing”. No prototype or concept. Just a quick official video where, in one scene, you can see Ford employees inside the design department, being led to the new pickup truck that will be the first model built on the new platform. We get many shots of these employees marvelling and drooling over the new truck, but zero shots of the truck itself. After 3 years of working on it, Ford is still not ready or willing to show anything concrete.

The only real bit of news was the announcement of a $30,000 base price for the pickup and a 2027 release date. That base price, by the way, probably signs a death warrant for the “Slate” truck we saw a few months ago. Which will now start at around $28,000 with nothing. I means nothing at all, no radio, air, or even power windows. Things that will no doubt be standard on the new Ford.

I was really expecting to see something from Ford today. I guess we’ll have to wait even longer…

  1. I’m wondering whether the manufacturing efficiencies impact repairability of the vehicles.

That seems to be a problem with Tesla — huge efficiencies when you build them, but even minor crashes are effectively a write-off.

  2. Ford has a concept of a plan for cheaper EVs. I have zero confidence considering all of Ford’s recent EV plans have been cancelled or delayed.

  3. If Ford really has found a way to manufacture EV’s as cheaply and efficiently as the Chinese, yesterday’s announcement seriously merits a Big Whoop. But given their track record, it’s more likely the $30K in 2027 pickup will arrive 3 years late and $10K over budget.
