Possible Next-generation Cadillac CT6 illustration.

Last Updated:

The Cadillac CT6 was sold in the US from 2016 to 2020. I had the pleasure to test drive it twice, and always thought it was a great car. With just a few small things missing.

It was revised a bit for the 2019 model year, and that facelift made it look much better. And yet, GM decided to pull the plug. Instead, keeping the CT4 and CT5 sedans. Which are just fine but really do not feel like most people expect of Cadillacs.

Now, GM’s president, Mark Reuss, claims killing the CT6 might have been a mistake. At the time, they just mentioned poor sales as the reason. As well a as well as using the production capacity to produce the upcoming Cadillac Escalade EV and Hummer EV. Of course, these 2 are pretty slow sellers anyway. Since they’re both well over $100,000.

Sales of the CT6 had gone all the way down to just over 3,100 units by 2020. Down for over 10,500 in 2017. The Hummer EV alone sells about 14,000 units a year. Which I guess is a hit compared to the old CT6…

The illustration above shows what a next-generation Cadillac CT6 sedan could look like. A true CT6 successor with the amazing hand-made Blackwing 4.2-liter Twin Turbo V8 with 550HP.

In 2022, Cadillac actually introduced a second generation of the CT6, which is still in production. And on sale, only in China. No more 4.2 Liter V8. And no more V6 either. the only engine available currently is a 2.0 Liter Turbo 4 cylinder. Like 99% of cars around the world these days. That menas the current CT6 is even less special than ever.

At least it seems to have a much improved interior…

If Cadillac wants a new CT6, they should figure out how to squeeze a fantastic engine like the original 4.2 Liter Blackwing into that large EV sedan they’ve been working on. And pull a “2026 Lexus ES and offer both gas and EV version of the new car.

No matter what powers it, a new CT6 for the US should not just be impressive but also look the part of a big Cadillac.

  1. Why post so many renderings of vehicles with old and outdated design language? A new CT6 would never look like this because Cadillac no longer uses this styling.

  2. The CT6 is the only Cadillac sedan that I would want to see go electric. Its a large boat designed to soak up the miles. Seamless torque from electric motors makes sense since it isn’t a performance sedan like the CT4 and CT5.
