Could the Saturn SC return as a cheap EV for 2028?

GM still has big EV plans, even if there is a current, momentary switch to Hybrid and a few new gas-powered models (Like the 2nd generation Cadillac CT5). A reborn Saturn brand could be the perfect outlet for a series of affordable new EV models.

It seems there were a few totally fake rumors about the rebirth of Saturn a couple of years ago. What I am talking about is far from a rumor; it is just an idea.

GM has already mentioned a new “Bolt family”. Which, although vague, does show the company’s intention to come up with a few new affordable EVs. Which will be compete with up to 8 new models from Ford. Not just the one new 2027 Chevrolet Bolt. I think this could be a job for a new Saturn sub-brand. A lineup of small affordable new EVs. Competing against the new Nissan Leaf, Kia EV3 and a series of new smaller and cheaper EVs coming from many other manufacturers.

I was a big fan of the Saturn SC when it came out. I though the design was pretty fantastic and so much more modern than anything Honda and Toyota were offering at the time. I am not sure how reliable these turned out to be over the years, but I always thought the whole Saturn brand was such an exciting and gutsy idea. At first…

After the original SC and SL, it quickly became just another GM brand. And ended up sharing many parts with other GM brands, which was the opposite of the original idea. In the end, it was even selling rebadged Opel models.

The illustration above shows what a new Saturn SC coupe could look like. Something that would compete against the new Honda Prelude. And the “maybe” upcoming Toyota Celica. The Chevrolet Bolt starts at under $30,000. That means a nicer looking 2 door coupe based on the same platform could logically start at well under $40,000. And still be a lot cheaper than the new $42,000 Prelude Hybrid while offering more performance.

A crazy idea, or is it really?

  1. I had a 92 Saturn SC2 during my college years. Teal green with tan cloth interior and automatic transmission. I wish I had kept it, but after 150k miles it started to burn oil. Otherwise, it was very reliable and cheap to maintain on my own while looking like a wannabe Ferrari Daytona ripoff (sort of– I know it’s a VERY long stretch to that conclusion). I adored that car— so many memories. Back at that time, me and two of my buddies went to Chimney Rock, NC to go hiking. One of them was stuck in the back seat because he was short. So many fond memories of those times, especially now that that short one has passed on unexpectedly a year and a half ago. This article brought back so many flashbacks of times when I had so much fun, and I did not fully appreciate what I had at the time. Yes— things are still going well…. but I wish my buddy was still here. Youth is indeed wasted on the young. And yes— if I could find an original version of an SC2 with the pop-up headlights(not the redesign) in good shape, I’d consider buying it. They are practically extinct now. An EV? Hmmm… would have to think about it.

  2. The image looks so much like what future Oldsmobiles would’ve/could’ve been, which I say as a compliment.

  3. Their cheapest vehicle needs to be a gas only Chevy car. And they need to have the stones to cancel the CT5. Forcing Cadillac sedans to be sporty is a boomer dream to let fade out.
