Volvo could be working on a new wagon for 2028.

According to The Drive, Volvo’s chief strategy and product officer, Michael Fleiss, has recently been mentioning the possibility of new wagons for the brand. That would of course be good news for wagon fans around the world, as well as Volvo fans. Because a Volvo brand without any wagons in its lineup is almost like Disney without animation.
Mr. Fleiss mentions the advantage wagons have in terms of aerodynamics over SUVs, a statement that could soon officially earn him the honorable and coveted title of Captain Obvious.
He also said: “In the future, these cars will also be fully electric, and we believe we have a great chance to compete with our fantastic electric system on the SPA3 in this kind of car.” And: “China is coming up with wagons. It’s hot shit right now. So people are really liking wagons. Ten years ago, it was a no-go, but now it’s coming.”
Since Volvo has been a Chinese-owned company for years, I can see why it would be in a good position to compete against other Chinese brands with a new station wagon or two.
Mr. Fleiss also mentioned that it would make sense to sell a new wagon in the U.S. as well. That part feels more like wishful thinking. Unless Volvo finds an original way to make their wagons more appealing to Americans than they have been recently.
Apparently, the last year for the V60 in the U.S. was 2018 (the V60 Cross Country continued until last year). Sales were just under 600 units that year, down from 4,429 in 2017. The Cross Country version didn’t do much better, with just 3,630 units sold last year — which was actually more than in 2024, when sales dropped to under 1,800 units.
You can see why Volvo decided to kill its wagons in the U.S. But I’m not seeing why a new EV one would magically be more popular. Maybe offering a REV version as well? That seems to be the trend these days. These could quickly replace PHEVs in the U.S., since most owners are apparently too dumb to plug them in on a regular basis anyway. REVs don’t need to be plugged in and are a blessing for the halfwit crowd.
I think a wagon would also have to be quite stunning to look at. Unlike recent Volvo unfortunate efforts such as the new XC60 or the poor, lumpy-looking ES90 sedan.
I guess there’s still hope…
