2029 Genesis G90. Nothing to lose…

Until the all-new GV90 EV SUV shows up, the current Genesis G90 sedan sits at the very top of the Hyundai Motor Group hierarchy. It is the most expensive and most luxurious model the company currently sells. That upcoming flagship will almost certainly take over as the brand’s technological and design halo model. For now, though, the G90 still wears the crown as Genesis’ ultimate expression of traditional, almost old fashion, luxury.

But what if Genesis decided to go a bit nuts with the next generation. So far, we know a revised version is right around the corner. (bottom image). And there will probably be a next generation, at least for its home market. Where its predecessor, the Hyundai Equus, was such a huge part of Hyundai’s history. A new top of the line EV sedan would work very well next to the new GV90 SUV. Based on the same new platform would also save cost. And really, it is such a rare car here, sale numbers of a new EV version couldn’t really be lower.

Genesis has recently showed a Wagon version of the current G90 as a concept. Apparently, someone at Hyundai really likes the idea. I personally think a new sleek, roomier wagon could actually replace the sedan all together. It would be a daring move, but they don’t have much to lose, with olny 1,867 units of the curent model sold in the US last year…

The G90 traces its lineage back to the old Hyundai Equus. Even back then, the car left a strong impression. The materials were rich, the ride was serene, and the attention to rear-seat comfort was surprisingly impressive. It was a very traditional interpretation of luxury. Closer in spirit to a Lincoln Town Car than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but it was sincere about what it was trying to be.

The current G90 arrived for the 2023 model year, and somehow it already feels like it has been around longer. Perhaps that’s because its design is deliberately restrained and mature, avoiding the flashy trends that can make some luxury cars look dated after only a few years.

Over time, the G90 has grown into a genuinely impressive flagship sedan. One that can stand alongside the best in the segment, especially the Lexus LS in the U.S. market. In many ways, the G90 feels like a spiritual successor to what the LS once represented: quiet excellence, effortless comfort, and an obsessive focus on craftsmanship rather than outright sportiness. All this from a new brand.

A cleaner, more horizontal front fascia would better suit the G90’s dignified character. It would also help visually widen the car and reinforce the understated luxury that Genesis has increasingly embraced across its lineup.

As the luxury market gradually shifts toward electrification, the current G90 may end up representing one of the last great traditional luxury sedans from Genesis. And if that turns out to be the case, it’s a pretty impressive way to close the chapter.

  1. The problem is that all Hyundai designs at Hyundai, Kia or Genesis don’t have legs. They get dated real fast.
