2028 Toyota Yaris.

According to European magazine AutoPlus, there is finally a new Toyota Yaris on the way. Signaling that Toyota is continuing to invest in its long-running subcompact model. However, it could still be over a year away, as the car is currently expected to arrive as a 2028 model year. That timeline suggests that many details could still evolve before its official debut.

The next generation is rumored to be available as a Hybrid, with a new EV model offered as an option alongside it. This dual approach seems to reflect what Toyota is currently doing with other models. Giving buyers flexibility depending on their needs and local infrastructure. Like the all-new Lexus ES sedan. There were also rumors earlier of an EV version of the 2026 RAV4. However, that idea feels quite redundant given Toyota’s existing EV lineup.

The new Yaris is also rumored to use the same new platform as the upcoming next-generation Corolla. Something that would bring improvements in rigidity, safety, and overall driving dynamics. It would also use the same all-new 1.5-liter engine as part of a more efficient hybrid system. Likely focusing on lower emissions and better fuel economy. The switch to the new platform would also produce a slightly larger car than the current generation, potentially improving rear passenger space and cargo capacity, areas where small cars are often criticized.

Apparently, the new Yaris will not try to compete with ultra-cheap new EVs from Europe and China. Instead, it may position itself as a more premium small car. With a starting price estimated at nearly 30,000 Euros for the EV version, and around 5,000 less for the hybrid. That pricing would put it above rivals like the VW Polo EV and smaller EVs such as the Renault 5. From what the AutoPlus illustrations suggest, it also may not be as playful or distinctive in design as some of those competitors. Leaning more toward a much more conservative look.

As usual, the Yaris will not be sold in the U.S., as Toyota continues to focus its American lineup on larger vehicles and crossovers.

  1. I had a 2010 Yaris, and I have to say that as a basic point A to B car it was really nice. That model still had the center mounted gauge cluster. I thought that was kind of odd at first, but I really came to like it. With my eyesight it was really easy to focus on the gauges in that position for me.
