Chevrolet Camaro back for 2028.

The Chevrolet Camaro ended production over a year ago, marking the close of an era for one of America’s most recognizable performance nameplates. The official word from GM was: “Camaro is a passion product. It has developed a fan base across the world and has brought people into Chevrolet dealerships for generations.” That global appeal and emotional connection made its discontinuation feel especially significant to enthusiasts. “The sixth generation specifically represented athleticism and composure, exuding confidence on the road and dominance on the track.” And: “While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro’s story.” That statement alone sparked a wave of speculation across the automotive world. Enthusiasts and analysts alike began imagining what form a revival could take, everything from a sleek 4-door sport sedan to, somewhat controversially, a crossover or SUV. Of course, an SUV version would likely stir debate among purists.

We finally have a bit more info about the 7th generation…

It now seems the next Camaro will be related to the 2nd generation Cadillac CT5, as well as the upcoming new Buick RWD sedan for North America. Production is scheduled to start at the end of 2027, as a 2028 model. Just a few months ago, there were rumors about a new Chevrolet sedan joining the next CT5 and a new Buick sedan. Which could mean a 4-door Camaro is on its way. These cars are also rumored to offer a V8 as an option.

Although Mark Reuss did mention the possibility of an EV a while ago. At that time, he also hinted at a model priced similarly to the Chevrolet Equinox EV. It would also be a car that focuses on “fun rather than pure horsepower”.

It seems things have changed since, and GM has decided to use the Camaro name for the new Chevrolet model. And let’s hope it’s really something new. And not something like the Chevrolet Bolt. Which is almost the same after a production hiatus. It would be pointless to bring back the 6th-generation Camaro. With fewer than 6000 sold in its last year.

I personally think all this all points to a sedan, and not a coupe. A new, roomier Camaro with 4 doors. They can pull it off, if they really want to…

  1. Given how buyer tastes have changed, I can understand GM looking into producing the Camaro as a four door sedan. But as an SUV?? That sounds ludicrous to me. What does the Mustang Malch-E have in common with the ‘real’ Mustang – other than the name and the styling of the tail lights? This trick is really just a marketing gimmick and a blatant cash grab. And it tarnishes a legendary nameplate. They could end up doing the same with the ‘new’ Camaro. Shameful.

  2. Back in the day when cars handled like obese ox and you had to pay a lot to get cars with 0-60 under 10 seconds these cars made sense to consumers that wanted something with a bit or lot more performance. Nowadays, mundane rides can beat many of the performance cars from the glory days. Driving isn’t nearly as fun as back then and the open road is tough to find. Average rides today are more than good enough. I’m old, this name was aspirational. I doubt today’s population cares all that much and name is meaningless. But, you have to call it something, call it this, but it won’t move the needle.

I think this is a waste of time.
