New Nissan Terrano PHEV Concept Revealed: Is It Related to the Xterra?

Nissan has just revealed a new concept for the Chinese market. Reviving the long-dormant “Terrano” nameplate in a way that feels both nostalgic and forward-looking.
So far, this is the official word: “The Terrano PHEV Concept marks the return of an iconic nameplate. Equipped with the latest plug-in hybrid technology, the Terrano builds on Nissan‘s off-road heritage while addressing the dual needs of outdoor adventure and urban commuting.” The company clearly wants to position it as a lifestyle-focused SUV, blending efficiency with rugged appeal, which is increasingly important in China’s competitive NEV segment.
Production versions of both concept cars are scheduled to be unveiled within one year. Nissan also plans to introduce three additional NEV models in China within that same timeframe. Accelerating its electrification push and improving competitiveness. Signaling a brand transformation aimed at younger buyers and tech-focused consumers.
The timing is particularly interesting since Nissan has just released teaser images of the all-new Xterra SUV for the U.S. market only a few days ago. It doesn’t seem that far-fetched to think these two projects could be related in some way. Especially considering how aggressively automakers are trying to streamline development costs and share platforms globally.
While that theory makes sense on the surface, it now appears the new Terrano is actually more closely related to the Nissan Frontier Pro PHEV. This is a pickup truck developed specifically for China, unrelated to the Frontier sold in the U.S. It also stands out as Nissan’s first plug-in hybrid that does not use the brand’s e-Power system.
As we already know, the upcoming Xterra will be based on a new truck platform and is expected to use a V6 engine. Wth a hybrid V6 likely offered as an option. In contrast, the Chinese-market Terrano will likely rely on a smaller 1.5-liter engine paired with electric motors.
It also shows how little American truck consumers care about gas mileage. I tested the Frontier a few weeks ago and couldn’t even get 15MPG around town. Freeway mileage was in the low 20s! Same with the Honda Passport.
I guess that might change a bit with the crazy gas prices we’ll be seeing for a while…
