New $30K EV Platform Could Spawn a 4-Door Ford Mustang Sedan.

Ford has been hard at work on its new mid-sized EV pickup truck. You know, the one based on that brand new “low cost” Universal EV platform. It is still supposed to start at under $30,000. At the same time, Ford has mentioned the possibility of a sub-$40,000 sedan. Which wouldn’t be such a big deal since most mid-size sedans still available start at well under $40,000 anyway. However, under $40,000 would be a really good price for a new EV sedan.

At the same time, we keep hearing about a possible 4-door Mustang.

I personally think Ford’s new sedan will be that 4-door Mustang. And that it will be based on the new Low Cost platform. It will be its own thing, not a Mach-e and not a classic Mustang Coupe.

A while ago, Ford also mentioned they would be focusing on the Bronco and Mustang brands. A new sedan using the Mustang name would be a no-brainer for the brand. A sub-$40,000 new EV Mustang sedan would also work in many markets, not just the US. Something that really looks like a Mustang. Something that was planned as a Mustang from the beginning. Unlike the Mach-e that was quickly redesigned with Mustang cues to fit the Mustang brand.

Ford‘s CEO Jim Farley mentioned: “Our first body style will be a pickup, but it’s really not a pickup. I would say it’s a new silhouette. What I mean by that is that it has more room than a RAV4, the best-selling passenger car in the US. That doesn’t include its frunk and pickup truck bed”.

That’s all pretty vague and could be anything. It could even be a regular looking pickup with a few more modern design elements. But I really don’t think Ford has the guts to deviate far from the classic pickup shape, unlike what Mr. Farley is saying.

The timing for a new sedan is also a bit strange since we were supposed to see second generation Mach-e this June. That has of course changed and everything seems to be focused on the new platform.

A new platform. A focus on the Mustang name/brand. A new 4 door sedan. It would all make sense wouldn’t it…

The illustration above shows what a new 4 door Mustang based on the new Low Cost platform could look like. Something not that much more expensive than a Camry or an Accord.

  1. Exactly how does one deviate from the classic pickup truck shape and succeed? Hyundai’s shape failed. Honda 1st Gen shape which did “OK” at best and lost a lot of the deviation when redone. Subaru BRAT and whatever that 4 door Outback based thing was? Tesla CyberTruck shape? The whole idea of a pickup is a square box in back big enough to put what you need to put into it. The moment you slope the B (if a 2 door) or C (if 4 door) pillar, you’ve created a problem concerning sales.

They should do something like the SLATE truck .

  2. After Farley cancelled the Escape/Escape HEV/Escape PHEV, I lost all interest in anything Ford does… especially their electrics.
