Could Toyota Turn the Sienna Into a Plug-In Hybrid Only Minivan?

This illustration shows what a next-generation Toyota Sienna minivan could look like. ss the current generation is now 6 years old. Toyota is probably hard at work on the next one.
The current Sienna arrived in late 2020 and could easily remain in production for another year or even two. Toyota could also be lazy and introduce an extensive facelift, redesigning the Sienna’s front end to resemble the Crown Signia or the 2026 RAV4. That’s essentially what the company did with the current Camry, giving it a much fresher appearance without investing in a completely new design.
The current Sienna debuted as a hybrid-only model, which was a pretty big deal in 2020. At the time, it was one of the few minivans to embrace electrification across the entire lineup. Since then. The current Camry has also become hybrid-only, joining models such as the Crown and the new Land Cruiser and the current RAV-4.
The next Sienna could once again push the envelope by becoming a PHEV-only model. By then, an improved Toyota plug-in hybrid system could deliver more than 40 or even 50 miles of electric-only range, making it a smart choice for many families. Most daily commutes, school runs, and errands could be completed without using any gasoline at all, while the gas engine would still provide the long-distance flexibility many buyers aren’t willing to give up.
A plug-in Sienna could end up being the perfect bridge between today’s hybrids and tomorrow’s fully electric family vehicles. It would allow Toyota to continue improving efficiency while giving consumers time to become more comfortable with charging infrastructure and EV ownership.
The Sienna sold over 101,000 units last year. Which was its best year since 2017. An amazing feast for a 6 year old sign. Which goes to show you minivan buyers don’t care. Same with the Honda Odyssey with over 88,000. Its best year since 2018. However potential buyers could soon be turned off by its big and smooth V6 ghastly fuel consumption. Most amazingly, the Chrysler Pacific also sold over 110,000 units last year.
Obviously, the Minivan market is far from dead in the US. Of course fewer models to choose from means more sales for ones left. Let’s hope Toyota comes up with something a bit better looking next time…
