Hyundai Taking a Big Risk With the 2028 Tucson.

This new image shows what the new, redesigned Hyundai Tucson could look like. Based on the many spy shots we have seen for so many months now. It also look very much like most illustrations and visual guesses we’ve seen.

The current generation Tucson is still a big hit for Hyundai, with over 234,000 units sold last year alone. Even more than in 2024. It still looks really good and attractive, and yet,  in true Hyundai fashion, the next one will look nothing like it. Early indications suggested the next generation could adopt a more upright and rugged appearance. And an almost weird design. While that might align with current SUV trends, it could also be quite a risky move.

The current version of the Tucson launched in 2020 and received a facelift in late 2023 for the 2025 model year. This would all point to a new generation arriving soon as a 2027. It will probably be a 2027 model in Korea, while arriving over here a few months later just in time for the 2028 model year.

The next Tucson will probably offer similar powertrains as the current version. With a choice of Hybrid or even PHEV models. And of course, the “profit margin special”, the XRT trim. The more rugged looking version that lets you showcase your pretend adventurous lifestyle. Extra off-road bits most buyers will never use for a few $1000s extra.

Either way, it will still be a bit of a gamble for Hyundai. Let’s hope it works better than the current Santa Fe. Which was also quite a departure from the previous one and again, quite a gamble. A gamble that hasn’t match the brand’s expectation so far.

  1. I thought the current Tuscon had a hideous rear that also looks dated. The front is not as bad but still looks dated.

  2. And just like that, the weird angles in doors (on current one) are gone, back to smoother design…
I wonder if Hyundai/Kia will ever design hybrid powertrain without the 6-speed AT to something similar like Toyota power split planetary unit?
