Hyundai Ioniq 9.

Last Updated:

I remember seeing the Hyundai Ioniq Seven concept at the Los Angeles auto show back in 2021 and was very impressed.

That same year Kia showed the concept version of the EV9 which in my opinion, was just trying too hard to be noticed. As we know, the Seven concept has officially become the Ioniq 9.

The Ioniq 9 will basically be Hyundai’s version of the Kia EV9, with its own design and interior. And probably very close driving characteristics. And very similar specs. It’s hard to say if the Hyundai version will be cheaper than the Kia, which is quite pricey.

The EV9 starts at $55,000 for the RWD 230-mile range version. And goes up to $74,000 for the GT line model with a 270-mile range ( a 304-mile RWD model is available for $59,200.

While these prices are actually cheaper than the new VW ID, Buzz, the GT line is getting very close to the Rivian R1S, now starting at $76,000 with a 270-mile range. Even the new stunning Lucid Gravity starts at $80,000.

However, as usual, leasing is the way to go with an EV. And the best lease on the Rivian is still pretty high at $650 a month for the cheapest model. And $350 a month for 24 months ($5000 down) on the $59,2000 long-range EV9.

It will be interesting to see if Hyundai prices the Ioniq 9 under or above the EV9. Or if they will offer the longer range standard etc… Either way, I think the Ioniq 9 has the potential to be even more popular than the EV9, with a much more pleasing design.

So far Kia sold over 16,000 units of the EV9. Or about the same as the cheaper EV6. It will be even more popular next year since it will be compatible with all Tesla chargers in January 2025. Buyers of new EV6s and EV9s after September 2024 will even receive a free adapter.

Looking at the first official teaser above, it is amazing how Hyundai was able to stay so close to the concept’s design. With a much larger thris side window it even looks better in my very unprofessional opinion.

I will be seeing it in person at the Auto Show in a few weeks and I cannot wait.

  1. It’s a shame it’s (a) lost the squared-off wheel arches, and (b) apparently gained a large curved chrome trim piece on the D-pillar, aft of the side window.

  2. Right there with you on the side windows Vince. It looks even better than the concept! I’m not a fan of thick D-Pillars where more window should be so I’m glad they made this change.
