Does Lincoln need a new sedan?

I’d say yes. But that’s only because Lincoln needs something, anything. Ford’s luxury brand now only sells SUVs, and nothing new is on the horizon. So yes, a new Zephyr sedan could be good news.

Lincoln does build and sell a sedan, called the Lincoln Z. That car used to be called the Zephyr, but it is only sold in China. It is basically a follow-up to what we knew here as the MKZ. Redesigned as the Zephyr, then later renamed Lincoln Z. It never came to the US.

Besides just anything, the brand needs something special. It seems luxury sedans might see some sort of resurgence soon, with a new Infiniti Q50 coming out. And especially, a new generation for the Cadillac CT5. With new Cadillac EV sedans planned as well. It would seem like a good idea for Lincoln to come up with something.

Ford’s new “low-cost” platform would be a good start. It would be much easier for Ford to make a profit out of a slow-selling luxury sedan. Otherwise, there is not much. The only car platform left is the Mustang. Or the old C2 platform used for the current Z. (As well as the Bronco Sport, Maverick, and Nautilus.) Do we really need another 2.0 Liter 4-cylinder FWD Lincoln?

Ford’s CEO Jim Farley even said recently that “an affordable Lincoln EV makes sense”. which all point to something based on the new EV platform. However, he also mentioned hybrid and EREV models. So who really knows?

I personally think that, unfortunately, Ford doesn’t seem to have any concrete plans for its luxury brand. A new mid-sized Lincoln Sedan would compete against the upcoming Cadillac EV sedans, as well as a new smaller sedan from Lucid.

That would be nice, but basically, Lincoln is at a point where they need anything to put them back on the map.

  1. it absolutely does. It shouldn’t be the full sized Continental. It should be something in the $50-60k range that can act as a luxury family hauler and competes to some degree with BMW/Tesla ModelY using the same approach that’s made their SUVs reasonably successful. Taller in the glass canopy than we’re seeing, plush, detail focused. A powerful modern hybrid. Remember, the ModelY has had very successful sales as an electric, when other EVs have failed. What else is different about it? Its shape, dimensions, and modern aesthetic.

  2. Conditional yes. As a branch of the low cost EV sold at Lincoln dealers, a Mercury one-off compact sedan. Aimed as close to Tesla Model 3 as they see fit, one of the few segments EV can do well.
