Is the Mazda 2 coming back?

The illustration above shows what a next-generation Mazda 2 compact could look like. In this particular case, it would look like a production version of the recent Vision X Compact Concept we just saw a few weeks ago. Something that is very unlikely to happen.

Mazda never said much about the concept. This was eclipsed by the more impressive Vision X Coupe concept released at the same time. But their short official word seems to describe it as the second coming:

“The Mazda Vision X-Compact is a model designed to deepen the bond between people and cars through the fusion of a human sensory digital model and empathetic AI. Acting like a close companion, it is capable of engaging in natural conversation and suggesting destinations, helping expand the driver’s world. This represents Mazda‘s vision for the future of smart mobility, where vehicles and people form an emotional connection, much like a heartfelt relationship.”

This is all, of course, quite ridiculous. And describes a technology that will probably be in most cars by next year, and obsolete in 3.

Of course, its design could end up influencing a possible future small car. But nothing like that is currently in the cards at Mazda. Which is only planning more SUVs for now.

Surprisingly, the third-generation Mazda 2 is still in production. It is now 11 years old and is still sold in a few countries. Over 21,000 units of it were sold in Japan last year alone. So I guess it is not quite dead yet. However, these small numbers might not be enough to justify another generation.

So the short answer is probably no. There is no new Mazda 2 coming. At least anytime soon…

  1. The Mazda 2 has been around. The same design that was here is still on sale in Asia. They also sell a Mazda2 hybrid in europe that’s actually a rebadged/slightly restyled Toyota. So I could see Mazda producing their own that is rationalized across all their markets, now that they are making a CX-90/CX-70 hybrid and a CX-5 hybrid on their own platform.
