Ford replaces the F-150 Lighning EV with a new REV version.

Despite being a huge initial buzz that included a long waiting list, the electric version of the Ford F-150 Lightning EV pickup hasn’t been the success Ford expected.

Of course, they expected way too much. Ford started by mentioning 40,000 units a year. After the initial demand, the company claimed it could sell 150,000 of them every year! It also came out at a much higher price than mentioned at first. Reality set in, and the best year was last year, with over 33,000 of them sold. Which isn’t actually that bad. It might be even a bit better this year. But that’s obviously not enough for Ford. The truck is also very expensive to build, and they want to find a way to make more money!

They’ve actually already stopped production of the F-150 Lightning. And just announced a replacement. And you guessed it, it will be a new model with a “high power generator”. A REV. Basically still an electric truck, but just like the RAM REV pickup or Nissan’s e-Power system, a gas engine charges the batteries while you drive. So you still need to fill up. In the case of the Nissan, the gas saving is often a bit less than with a regular Hybrid. Ford might have found a way to improve things somehow. The new truck is expected to get a 700-mile range.

Next year, Nissan’s REV system will be available on the redesigned Rogue. The RAM pickup will have its REV trim available. Scout wil offer REV versions of their all-new SUV and pickup. And now a new Ford truck.

However, the F-150’s next generation keeps being pushed back, and is now expected around late 2027. That means the new REV could be based on the current generation. Either that or it won’t be available for a couple of years…

It’s really too bad and a step backward. But I guess the general large truck-buying public wasn’t ready.

Also, expecting 150,000 sales a year was just idiotic…

  1. Farley is just the latest clown in the revolving circus of terrible auto industry CEOs. Have they ever met their F150 customers? They aren’t exactly EV buyers. So Farley blames Biden. lol. Who’s he gonna blame when the F150 REV fails and Ford begins selling Renaults?

  2. To the Farley comment. Also blame Bill Ford. Nepo baby in a nepo family. The biggest problem with Ford is the Ford family. Their special class of stock means they only need to persuade about 10% of the stockholders to get their way even they own about 2% of the stock. That 2% is worth 40% when things come up for a vote. The Fords have no skin in the game monetarily. Yet if they can persuade 10% of the 98% of the remaining stock, they win. I doubt a 100+ years from the company’s founding they have all their capital tied up in Ford Motor Company.

Other than embarrassment for failing, Ford’s demise would not economically hurt them. So, they “Try” things. My guess is a Ford company without Ford involvement would be a better company.

BTW in the text. It doesn’t matter how many you sell. It matters whether you make money on them. Cut the price in half and they’d sell great. And bankrupt the company.
