Lincoln Should Bring Back the Town Car—and It Actually Makes Sense.

While we haven’t seen a Lincoln Town Car since 2011, it could be the right time for a return of Lincoln’s big sedan. Especially with a new generation Cadillac CT5 coming out. As well as a brand new RWD Buick sedan.
Sales of that last generation had come down to under 9500 in its last full year. And Lincoln did bring back the Continental sedan for a few years in 2017. It wasn’t the success they had hoped for and production stopped just 3 years later. Of course, blaming the failure on “Americans don’t want sedans anymore”. What Americans didn’t want was a Lincoln Continental based on the Ford Mondeo. It just didn’t look the part of a big Lincoln sedan. And it wasn’t a replacement for the Town Car either. It was also pretty expensive and had tons of super cheap-looking plastic chrome trim inside.
What would work better is a larger RWD sedan like the last Town Car. Of course, that Panther platform is long gone, and adapting the current Mustang platform would probably be very costly. However, Ford has recently been showing a new 4 door Mustang sedan at a dealer meeting in Las Vegas. That menas they were able to stretch the Mustang platform quite a bit. It seems that a llitle bit more and you could maybe get a new platform for a large Lincoln sedan.
Thre is also thew new Ford Universal EV Platform, that will be used for over 8 new models. of course, it will sound blasphemous to the old guard, but a large EV platform coukld actually be the best way to revive the good old Town Car. It would instantly become quieter and more powerful than it has ever been. Without even trying hard. It would also be based on a lower cost platform that would allow Lincoln to turn a profit even with a modest hit.
As I recently found out, the Town Car still has tons of fans. Of all ages, it seems. It was a super reliable car and many of them can be bought for around $10,000 or so. Making it a great deal for those looking for a big luxury car that isn’t too old. And then, you start looking at various generations of the Lexus LS (why not). These are also not that expensive and reliable. And probably more sophisticated than the Town car.
Later, you realize you don’t really want to spend $10,000 on a car you don’t need at all. And that you just spent way too much time watching Lincoln TownCar/Lexus LS videos and maybe it’s just time to go to bed…
