2026 Toyota Corolla PHEV.

Toyota unveiled 2 new ICE engines a few weeks ago. A 1.5 Liter and a larger 2.0 Liter. The 1.5 Liter is now rumored to be used in the next-generation Toyota Corolla as part of a new PHEV powertrain.
The new PHEV (maybe with a 2.0 Liter) would also make it into a next-generation Toyota Harrier. The current Harrier was sold over here as the Toyota Venza and a PHEV trim is already available in other countries.
The press conference unveiling the new engines was held with Mazda and Subaru. The new engines are smaller, lighter, and more powerful than the current 1.5 Liter and 2.0 Liter engines, allowing, Toyota claims, for even more aerodynamic car designs. These new engines will probably basically replace the current 2.0 Liter and 2.4/2.5 Liter engines Toyota uses in their various Hybrid/PHEV cars and trucks. However, it is an improvement and not a revolution. Their new hybrids will be even more efficient while they will be pushing all their new EVs coming out soon.
While a new Corolla will certainly be getting the new 1.5 Liter, it will probably also end up in a mid-cycle revision of the Toyota Prius at around the same time. And of course, this new engine will also help Mazda and Subaru offer new Hybrid models, although the timing could be quite late.
The illustration above shows what a next-generation Toyota Corolla PHEV could look like.
