Chrysler Imperial.

Last Updated:

Chrysler is hard at work on their first new model in many, many years. It will be the production version of the Chrysler Halcyon concept we saw a few months ago.

The “whatever they will call it” new sedan will be based on the new STLA platform, just like the new 2025 Dodge Charger and Jeep Wagoneer S. No word on pricing, but so fat, the price of the Jeep Wagoneer S loaded Launch Edition is around $71,000, which isn’t cheap but much less than what many had expected. And again, this is the most expensive version.

The new Chrysler sedan will probably be competing against higher-end versions of the Hyundai Ioniq 6, or even maybe the Tesla Model S. But what if Chrysler decided to go nuts and offer something larger, better, and more expensive? Something reminiscent of their “good old days”, like an Imperial model.

The Imperial used to be the top-of-the-line Chrysler from 1926 to 1993. It was even its own brand from 1955 to 1975. The last 2 door coupe was the 1981/83 model. The name “Imperial” came back from 1990 to 1993, competing with the FWD Lincoln Continental and Cadillac Sedan DeVille of that era.

It would be nice to imagine a new Imperial Coupe based on the new STLA platform. Something a bit retro-futuristic vaguely inspired by the 1981 model.

Of course, we all know these big-door luxurious coupes are gone, and so are people who used to buy them.

However, there’s nothing wrong with a halo car.

  1. Egads! Why choose a tacky ’80s model to draw “inspiration” from? Anyway, the render could be anything from anybody. I think “Imperial” is probably too unPC to be chosen for the name of any new upscale Chrysler. Chrysler has been for decades in an odd spot: is it mass-market or a bit more, Buick or Cadillac?

  2. The Imperial was an incredible car in its day. I had 1 in 80 and put over 250000 miles on it. Quite a bit for a car of that era. If they do resurrect it I hope they don’t mess it up

  3. Foreign makers still do sedans .
Not everyone wants a Crossover, or SUV , and the former does nothing well !
They handle poorly, and aren’t good off road either
    Sorry, boring, and no class.
If you need one, fine, but they sure a wrecking automobiles fun , and style.
    Imperial needs to come back.
It would fill a niche in the market.
Build a Newport on the platform to , less distinctive.
It needs to be called IMPERIAL , and not some benign name, or please numbers.
    Build it well, and beautiful.
A quality beautiful, distinctive car ( s) will sell , particularly with Lincoln ( failing miserably with no cars ) , and Cadillac only offering Midsize .

  4. can you only drive a hallow car on halloween, or does it work the rest of the year too?

  5. Car looks very presentable tome but if at 71k is the only starting price = FLOP because no average person gonna cough up that much for this much

  6. Once you get over $75,000 or so you are buying more than a machine. You are buying an experience. You are buying at least a touch of exclusivity and prestige
What will the purchasing experience by like?
Will you end up in a little cubicle with some sweaty “sales manager” who tries to harass you into buying some mystery “pack”?
And face it-no one under 80 is likely to be impressed with your new Chrysler. Infact some people may be surprised they still make them, others may not ever heard of them.

  7. Think there is space in the brand portfolio for American Luxury, especially as all the underpinnings have been developed.
Maybe, it is the only way to differentiate between the brands is to look back at history and keep some brands as local brands.
